Soo.... Airlock freebies

I noticed this conversation on a few forums, but here's the thing. In the High Guard book it states you get a freebie, every 100 Tons (HG. p25). Yet the all singing, all dancing updated, new spangled rules in the 2024 Updated Rulebook state, you get a freebie every 500 Tons (CB2024 p152). Given that the 2024 info was the 'new norm' with the Bridge Tonnage debacle, would that mean the Airlock freebie has been NERFED?

High Guard trumps Core, in regard to spacecraft design rules.

Whether it makes sense, is another issue.
Untrue. If they are updating the build rules in Core, which is now more recent than High Guard, then that rule trumps the older rule in High Guard. For an example of that, see the kerfuffle over bridge sizes changing for 100-ton ships.

It looks like you are correct. It's now 1 free per 500 tons by my reading. Good catch.

A ship has at least one airlock per 500 tons.

Seems more like a requirement, rather than free lunch.
Belatedly realizing I have the 2022 update in printed form, I checked it, and you might be right as it says the same thing. So, peraps this isn't a change to the free airlock.

Blast! I was just feeling happy about the extra tonnage for 100 Ton ships! Now We have to pay for extra Exits... sheesh!

So, does the initial free airlock take tonnage or not? Because all the ship designs say it doesn't but this is implying that it does in fact cost tonnage even if the cost is free.

Seems a bit silly to say tho, like ; you need 2 bits of bread to make a sandwich, and every sandwich comes with 2 slices free....

For my money, I am going to go with the HG rule of one free every 100T, but don't forget, you NEED one every 500T, yet you have 5 free by then...

Just because you can put an airlock in doesn't mean that you have to. Airlocks definitely take up space on your deckplans whether or not you have to account for them in your tonnage. And they have to be secured, so you may not want four exits on your ship just because it's not an extra charge.

As far as I can see, the rules are you can put one in for every 100 dtons, but you must put one in for every 500 dtons.

So say a Scout Courier at 100 tons. The rules say it MUST have an airlock, and every 100 tons of ship has a no-cost airlock, but it doesn't say a non-tonnage airlock. So are we now losing 2 tons, but no additional credits, for that 1 required airlock?
This implies you MUST have an airlock on a ship. So even a non-starship of 100 tons is required to have one, but a 95 ton small craft is not.

Yeah, I just assumed common sense would imply it as not a necessity, my presumption. Sorry.

Fair point.

A ship has at least one airlock per 500 tons, is what it says in the core rulebook. One could say that means if you hit 500 tons, you must now have at least one airlock and anything less is optional.

I see what you mean. I think it means on deck plans you get at add 1 free airlock, no tonnage, per 100T, but you MUST add one, to the plans, for free, every 500T. Yet the rules are different for fighters or small ships with cockpits, they do not need airlocks... by my understanding.

The 95 ton shuttle has a bridge and it pays for the tonnage of its airlock.
