1. Quad turrets are rare and not especially efficient but pack a serious punch and have potential for intimidation alone.

2. Quad turrets provide DM+3 on point defence.

3. One tonne turret at technological level twelve, requiring two power points, and costing two megastarbux.

4. Beam laser times four, four to nine damage, technological level twelve, accuracy plus one, attack bonus four, point defence bonus eight (three plus one plus four): ten to eighteen, effect two to ten.

5. If you count short range: eleven to nineteen, effect three to eleven.

1. Upto now, I had the believe that fusion guns were the replacement to laser drills.

2. Then I realized that using them is both explosive, and that it spews radiation all over, like what happens to that airliner when the passenger no longer had control over her bowels.

3. There's no real difference in performance between hardpointed and firmpointed laser drills.

4. Logic indicates that you can easily install a firmpointed variant in a hardpointed turret.

5. The reverse seems unlikely, or maybe it's because there's not enough juice available to push it to it's optimum performance.

6. Why, because outside of energy requirements, they both cost the same, and probably weigh the same.

7. For the two budgetted versions, you either compromise on accuracy or weight; the problem being, weight is considered virtual, so you're not going to get penalized by having something that already weighs nothing.

8. You have three premium variants, where the only disadvantage is being technological level eleven, cost being somewhat irrelevant in comparison; commercially, it's between energy saver or more efficient driller.

9. The long range one, obviously, is more militarily applicable.

Re: lasers, the beam and pulse barbettes are quite potent for attacking armored grav/land/sea vehicles, orbital laser style
 
That's what turrets and barbettes are for, taking care of smallcraft and attack boats, which is why bays have targetting penalties.

I wouldn't try charging a spacecraft with a grav tank, though swarming probably would be more successful.

I just mean the aim bonuses counteract the scale penalties and the barbettes specifically have enough damage as is to really put the hurt on even a heavily armored grav tank, turrets are not as useful in this particular role because of their lower base damage

Going through the various combinations indicates there are nuances to the the damage scale, easier to explain at the capital ship level.

Primary armament is the spinal mount, which is meant to take out, presumably, ten kilotonne plus hulls, and secondary armament bays two kilotonne plus vessels.

At the tertiary level, it's swarms of missiles, torpedoes and anything upto two kilotonnes.

If you can apply forty points of damage from the same attack against a hundred tonne scoutship, there's nothing left to hold the components together.

At triple damage, that would be the (lucky) barbette.

However, if you have quite a number of turrets to allocate, going by Traveller combat mechanics, you tell them to each individually to target the scoutship, and accumulated damage would achieve the same effect.

It's the reason I'm concentrating on turrets at the moment, trying to locate that balance as dual use, point defence and anti aerospacecraft, rather than just relying on automated point defence.

You could combine automated point defence and barbettes, as a more effective of each role separately, but I'm looking to see if there's a less effective solution, at a lower cost.
 
I think one of the fundamental differences is that I've been primarily using the fleet combat rules, and it doesn't take that high of a tech level before you can make ships completely immune to turret weapons with armor, which is probably something you would do for small military craft because it increases the tonnage cost to counter them considerably
 
Simplification is a great time saver.

1. The first question I had, was, could you firmpoint it?

2. In theory, half a tonne should substitute for a one tonne firmpointed single turret.

3. Size of the point defence lasers is okay, since you could substitute one for a normal turret weapon.

3. Too bad you can't reverse that, since I would have loved to install a beam laser on a point defence turret.

4. I sorta think that this would be the preferred defence system for dirtside facilities, and space stations.

5. For small private and commercial spacecraft, it should be sufficient defence on a one to one exchange against a missile rack.

6. Torpedo penalties still apply.

7. Considering current events, also a relatively cheap drone killer.

8. Possibly, a scaled down laser drill.

9. Maybe for more precision work, definitely more accurate.

1. Having looked over the selection, there are only three point defence lasers that I find interesting.

2. This has to be thought of in relation to all other available turretted weapon systems, and performance over cost, power and desired results.

3. The 0.6-1-9 - p/d t/120 - s - 1½ - 0.1875 is the cheapest variant, but together with the point defence turret, does get a plus two on attack.

4. Works also as a varmint gun, probably sufficient to discourage any unfriendly natives from storming the spacecraft.

5. The 0.5-1-B - p/d y/v - s - 1½ - 0.3125 has the distinction of having a steady stream of three points of damage, and probably could be used as a laser drill.

6. As an enlarged laser pointer, you might use them as signalling, communications, and laser targetter.

7. However, as a door knocker, or possible shot across the bow, pulse laser.

8. The 0.5-0.25-C - e/25 p/d - s - 1½ - 0.375 only requires a quarter of a power point.

9. Interesting for perhaps a light fighter.

2. A single point-defence laser can be mounted in a point-defence turret or replace standard weapons in a normal turret.

3. Which can include mounted fixtures and firmpointed variants.

4. It's flea bites, but you probably could use it fairly continuously in dogfight mode.

1. The 0.5-1.125-E - e/75 p/d y/v - (s)a - 3½ - 1.5 could be an expensive laser drill.

2. The 0.5-1.125-F - a/+3 e/75 p/d - (a/c)a - 2½ -1.125 could be a really effective point defence weapon, if there is a firmpointed variant of the point defence turret.

3. On the ground scale of weapon damage, one to three is the same as fusion gun man portable, minus the radiation, and presumably the blast.

4. Transferring it to a vehicle chassis does leave us with a question, whether for lasers or other turret energy weapons in general, if they are considered firmpointed, or just declared hardpointed, which makes a difference in range, though not necessarily in energy requirements.

1. Energy drills.

2. Design mechanics dictate that the ground scale lasers are several times in volume, compared to shipboard ones.

3. I'd say the plasma barbette ones probably about as large as is practical.

4. The laser drill barbette is guesswork.

5. You could probably have a plasma bay weapon, for really large bores.

6. Comparing the various plasma and fusion weapon systems, the likely costs, twenty five percent premium for the plasma bays, doesn't seem to make sense.

1. The values are extrapolated, so I wouldn't bet on them being accurate.

2. The turret fusion gun probably is technological level twelve, not fourteen.

3. The plasma gun bays are likely cheaper than the fusion ones.
 
It sort of evolves.

Fighting Ships gave the hook on the Empire in Star Wars, with the abnormally high application of wedged hull configurations.

Reimagined and Deadlock hints at the the current state of the Confederation Fleet, which is why I tagged the next generation fast dreadnought as the Mercury class.

Cattle Car tells me not to take this stuff too seriously.

The Expanse fits in there, somewhere, likely kinetic point defence, and aesthetics.


1. What most Colonial Fleet captains would have figured out, that without a flak screen, your starwarship isn't likely to survive a large scale battle with the Cylons.

2. Also, you build capital ships before a conflict, not during it.

3. On commencement of hostilities, you accelerate existing construction, possibly recall older ships to modernize and/or refurbish them.

4. If you think that hostilities will continue long enough to complete a new batch of capital ships, that's another issue as to whether the current order of battle needs replacement from presumed attrition, and/or reinforcement.

5. Another issue is politics and budget, in that at a minimum you want half completed hulls that a stingy postwar government might not have authorized, and you can complete at leisure.

6. It's hard to hide spinal mounted hulls.

7. There may be other bottlenecks involved in construction of spinal mounts, besides costs.

8. As far as I know, there are no Vargr constructed starwarships with spinal mounts.

9. As such, if only a limited number of spinal mounts can be constructed per annum, the Confederation navy will opt to build the largest ones they can, and that would require larger platforms.
 
Confederation Navy: Cruiser Gap

1. The Confederation Navy kickstarts off with the development of the Victory class battlecruiser.

2. It sort of tries to thread the needle between cruising and line of battle, but with the likely assumption that it would not need to face the Imperium Navy battleships, at least not until the next generation of capital ships are developed and deployed.

3. Having acquired operational experience, Naval Staff identified the need to split missions and roles, rather than relying on a single starwarship type to fulfill most of them.

4. The battlecruiser would be increased in size to try and compete with the Imperium Navy battle line, while a heavy cruiser would be developed to be a split off from the new battlecruiser class, utilizing as much of it's components as possible, but on a smaller scale.

5. The strike mission would be undertaken a specific type of (heavy) cruiser, which would also try to borrow as many as components as possible from the battlecruiser.

6. Light cruisers and below would be open to competitive ideas, seeing if you could find a general purpose type(s), or would need specialization.

7. This resulted in the Zeus class battlecruiser, supported by the Minsk class heavy cruiser, and the Yamamoto class strike cruiser.

8. It becomes formalized that the definition of a light cruiser is a large starwarship without a spinal mount, but in the cruiser role.

9. The Yarmouth class demonstrated an attempt to exert presence dirtside, through it's capability to easily navigate atmospheres.
 
Confederation Navy: Cruiser Gap

A. With the technological level fourteen breakthrough, the fast dreadnought concept was developed to trump the Imperium Navy's normal line of battleships.

B. However, this necessitated an even greater emphasis on covering the gap between intermediate combatants and capital ships.

C. The Normandy class heavy cruiser came online as the companion to the Prometheus class fast dreadnoughts.

D. The Beijing class undertook the (deep) strike role.

E. While at the lower end, Naval Staff tried stuffing more capability into smaller hulls.

F. The light cruiser shrunk to the Madrid class, probably because someone thought two large bays were enough.
