Just remember that in US copyright laws it is EXPLICITLY stated that rules cannot be protected by copyright law, only their manner of presentation is protected, so you can use rules in your software all you wish, as long as your software format is not a blatant rip off of anyone elses.
So the question you need to answer is what does British copyright law say? This is because Mongoose is covered by British law, and due to international agreements, the US definitely enforces them.
However, if your in the US, and publish from the US, your probably covered by US laws as priority, but I am far from knowledgeable about the in and outs of interpreting international laws and how they are effected by agreements, etc...
So see if English copyright laws say something similar about rules. There is a good chance of it, since US law has so much in common with British laws.
