Depends on

1) the fleet I'm playing and its strengths,
2) The fleet strengths I'm playing against
3) What scenario I'm playing
4) Which ships are available in my campaign fleet at the time.
5) The mood I'm in at the moment
6) and which direction the solar winds are blowing....


OK, maybe not the 6th one.
 
I play Al Malik. With rare exceptions, boarding is not a realistic main strategy for me, so shooting and scenario rules are the primary ways to score VP. In theory a pure-galliot/stealthship fleet might be a threat, but it would also be pretty boring and very contrary to the flavor of the fleet. If the S&P article becomes official that might change a bit, but everyone else gets more troop options too, so I suspect the balance stays the same - with Al Malik toward the bottom.
 
I don't know, my experience with al-Malik is limited still, but I've had pretty good success with Galliots and stealth ships. Its a bit of a surprise to the opponent who isn't expecting that tactic from the al-Malik. And its definietely not boring. Trying to manueuver your opponent into a tight spot and prevent being shot to pieces in the process really makes it tactical.
 
Tactics can depend very much on the layout of the battlefield. On big open tables with just one or two big chunks of terrain stand back and shoot is pretty much best. To get close and board, it is better to attempt this with a good scattering of smaler terrain.

I've played it, and found it dull, as any game where I'm using only one or two ship classes is. YMMV.

Maneuvering to board isn't really all that tricky unless the terrain is unusally heavy, especially with the high-agility galliots. The stealthsips seemed badly overpriced to me - with hull 4 they'd be reasonable, but hull 3 makes them so fragile as soon as a stealth roll is failed that the extra 40 points is too steep for my tastes. Besides, stealth works best at a distance, but you have to close to board - poor combo. Hopefully the stealth destroyer will give us a standoff gunship with stealth, which should work better.

Of course, against fleets with no scout stealth works better. I've always faced scouts when fielding them, so I'm probably not seeing them at their best.
 
To be fair, I've not faced many scouts yet, so I've found the stealth ship works wonderfully, though it is a little steep at 160 points.
 
I admit as well I haven't done many games with my new al-Mailk fleet, but I have had good luck with Stealthships and Galliots. I found best to throw my main fleet directly at them and lay down enough firepower to where they are more concerned about my frigate and destoryer groups than anything else. Then I have my Stealthships and Galliots seek out any stragglers which have broken from the enemies fleet or have been isolated by my firepower to board.

I did have a game though where my enemy knew what they were and what I was planning and opened up on them ASAP, but I didn't mind cause that was that many less shots directed at my frigates, destroyers, and scouts. The Galliots went bye bye, but the Stealthships survived as my enemy kept failing a number of his stealth rolls. In that game, I didn't mind paying the extra points for the Stealthships as they made nice moving stealthed targets for him to shoot at to his content while I hammered away at him.

And i supose Grand Admiral Cohen leads your fleet ?

Seriously, haven't had much of a chance to play, and haven't found much on the site about fleet tactics, but i would think i'd probably go for the if it moves, shoot it option (have a Hazat Fleet). When i get my second fleet (Church), tactics will obviously need reviewing.
 
Yes, Admiral Conan proudly serves aboard the Vuldrok Dreadnought. He is known for his legendary mirth and his deep brooding melancholy. :)
 
As far as I understood the "ancient vuldrok proverb", it included "hot water, good dentishtry and shoft lavatory paper" :twisted:
