So, Cthonian Stars.

One thing I like about Mongoose Traveller is the fact that it has many backgrounds to choose from: Hammer's Slammers, Strontium Dogs, - and now this one - which I like.

I don't believe that everyone will like all backgrounds - but there is much to people like me to like about this one. Dark Conspiracy type horror is a love of mine and this background will be fun for me to play against.

Not for everyone - but I really like it and will enjoy using it.

Yes, this type of setting is unlikely to appeal to me - but, even when one doesn't care for a setting (I generally create my own) - the mechanics and random aspects can still come in useful.

I'm interested in Cthonian Stars, but I would be more interested if it translated into Classic Traveller (which I consider is the current MGP Product) rater than a whole new limited backdrop of the Sol System in the 22nd century.

I, long ago, replaced th (silly, IMO) droyne with the Cthulu-like Elder Race as the Ancients. the Droyne became 'minions'. (Which they are, in CT , of Grandfather and his ilk/family).

For me, the GOO are older than the Ancients which after all are still only dating from the dawn of the homids. I discarded much of Lovecraft's history but had the fear of the GOO hardwired into the minds of a thousand different sophonts by the Ancients who were preparing for war with the GOO. This was the original rift between Grand-dad and his kids.

I think that any setting that empowers humanity against the Great Old Ones needs to remember that - for a proper Lovecraftian feel - that empowerment still ultimately needs to be irrelevant. Whether you are wearing an armored battlesuit and have a hand-held fusion gun in the far future or you have a shotgun and a cross around your neck in the 1920s, they still should be completely inadequate tools to face what you are confronted with and the only thing you can do is survive and live to tell the tale. Also, a lot of the universe needs to still be unknown and not catalogued or quantified, because a lot of the horror of Lovecraft is about the unknown.

I think that's why Event Horizon works so well - because for all their science and tech, the humans still didn't really understand what was going on, and the only thing they could do was run away or be consumed by it.
