So Amazon Cancelled My Preorder of SM

I got an email this morning from Amazon that they cancelled my preorder of Spinward Marches. Is this just me or is this happening to others as well? Is it to late to get a decent price from FLGSs?

Amazon's reason is "we'vesince found that it is not available from any of our sources at thistime." I mean I know that it has only recently come available (even if Mongoose just sold out of the first printing), but it still stinks.

Sure you can get a decent price from a retail establishment. $29.95 ; I mean, that's what Mongoose tells us it's worth, and they are the authority.

Ok, "decent" was a poor word choice. Perhaps, "slightly reduced price" is a better phrasing.

amazon.com cancelled my preorder of Mercenary  , and then amazon.co.uk cancelled my preorder of the SM book.

So it's not happening only to you.

With the Aussie dollar the way it is at the moment the FLGS should be selling them at about the same prices as US dollars, not three times the price. They still have the exchange rate at rates from three years ago.

I have found places like FRP games is great for getting RPGng stuff cheaper but with the shipping/handling charges that you almost get the item for what you would have paid if you actually purchased it through the company itself that produced it. SO my real advise is to just purchase the Traveller products directly from Mongoose Online store.

The Au$ used to be pegged Au$2=£1... did they unpeg it in the last 15 years?

They floated the Australian Dollar in 1983, so 25 years give or take. It's been roughly 2-3 AUD to the pound for a long time. We've been creeping up on the USD for a while now, not that you'd notice it in local prices.

For almost twenty years the rough rule of thumb here (west coast, not sure about the east) has been to get the US price and double it to cover exchange rates, customs, shipping and what have you. MGT was $65, D&D 3.5 was $70 per book and 4E is $60 per book so the prices are starting to come down with the US dollar.

Exchange rates right now (Thursday, June 26 2008 at 10:54 am pacific daylight time) at http://www.xe.com/ucc/

1.00 USD = 1.04661 AUD
1.00 USD = 0.503422 GBP
1 GBP = 1.98640 USD
1 AUD = 0.955332 USD
1.00 GBP = 2.07944 AUD
1 AUD = 0.480898 GBP

S~M still hasn't arrived at any of my local stores, but they do tell me MGT sales have surprised them. 3rd best seller after DnD 4E and Dark Heresy... That's pretty good going... :)

Spinward Marches has a hard release date of July 1, 2008 in the US. That is the date that DISTRIBUTORS can start shipping the product to Stores. So don't even start looking until the 2nd. And remember that the 4th of July Holiday means most of the shipping companies (UPS & Fed Ex) are off on Friday.

Amazon has it up for sale again. You can pre-order it again.

However the new order is at a higher price ie from $18.45 to $29.95.

I am complaining to Amazon about cancelling my pre-order then reinstating the product at a higher price two days later and asking if this is their standard policy if the price rises on pre-ordered products. A reference to their pre-order price guarantee and me having contact with lots of other customers on this board was thrown in for good measure . I suggest everyone else does the same.

?????? I just got my cancellation notice.

Wellllllll.....I ended up cancelling them for the MGT core book, and buying at my FLGS when it was delayed and delayed and delayed at their end.

So, perhaps I'll do the same here. Amazon has generally been pretty good, but then, I've never done a preorder from them - most of the stuff I buy from them tends to be about a decade old, and badly remainered, anyway (the beauty and curse of esoteric historical interests - ie " evolution towards ironclads : the steam and sail navy")

Nope, I usually hoover the charity stores in search of books donated by people who don't know what they're worth.

Oh yeah, that works too.....but I'll bet we don't overlap much in our favorite haunts.......

EDIT: Depends on your neighborhood, also. I'm reminded of the time I was visiting Portsmouth. Not only were the used book store crammed with Nautical treasures but, yes, the charity shop had some too - I picked up Coways fighting ships vol 2 (predreadnaught era reprint) for like the cost of a mediocre hamburger.....granted, it was the seamans benevolent society store, or somthing like that.....
