Smoke Questions

Hi all! We just got finished with our first game of VaS and had a few questions. This thread will be dealing with smoke...I will post the other questions in other threads:

1) When do you place the smoke template for the Create Smoke SA? I just found this while searching and wanted to see if anyone could confirm or deny the statement. Do you really place it before you move your ship?
Since smoke is a Special Action, you place it before you move. Then your ship moves and attacks normally for the remainder of the turn. Since you always have to move a minimum of 1 inch (unless your ship speed is 0 due to Criticals) you will begin to move out of the smoke during that current turn. So for the ship that laid the smoke, only the rear most portion of the ship will be protected by the smoke (unless the attacking ship has Radar). Of course, the smoke you have laid down can help block line of sight to other ships in your fleet. You can even move other ships in your fleet behind the smoke to protect them as well.

this thread seems to say place at the end of movement with a quoted ruling from Matt (the designer)

http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26478

which makes more sense as if you didnt then the smoke would cover the "previous" turns move not the current turn

Hi Juggler! Thanks for the link (great model by the way). Ok so that is official then?

1) Declare Special order "Create Smoke"
2) Move ship
3) Place Smoke template "With leading edge on the center point of ship so it trails behind it" at the end of the ships movement

Correct?

If this is correct, then is the ship generteing the ship considered to be "in" the smoke since its on its center point and thus invisible?

Sorry for all the questions...we just played our first game and smoke caused us the most confusion.

Thanks!
Curtis

YOu are pretty much correct. Yes the ship is counted as in the smoke, but only if the LOS corsses the smoke so A ship will be able to hide in its own smoke from gunnery behind it. Gunnery in front of it will have a clear line of fire.
