Sir Patrick Moore, RIP

We have, this year, seen the deaths already of Sir Bernard Lovell and Neil Armstrong.

This is the trifecta.

Sir Patrick Moore has died, aged 89.

Rest easy, Sir Patrick. No matter how worthy your successor Chris Lintott, The Sky At Night will not be the same without you. Space exploration and astronomy will not be the same without you.

I could not have put it better myself.

Sorry to hear about his passing. I only learned about him after being mention on Doctor Who (yes, I is American) and have never seen his shows. We here stateside have not a sufficiently enthusiastic and heard science spokesperson since Carl Sagan and that is many a year ago.

Well... I live in England so I don't know what BBC America shows. Here in the UK, there is a physicist/musician called Professor Brian Cox and a comedian/physicist called Dara O'Briain. They've done a fair amount to popularise science... for more details see wikipedia :)

I've been watching Sky at Night for decades. I wrote to Patrick Moore when I was 14. My enthusiasm for the subject recently rubbed off on my son who decided to take Astronomy GCSE at his school this year! It means we have drawings of all the constellations on flash cards stuck all over the house, including the toilet!

Sir Patrick and the Sky at Night have been in the background of my entire life. I loved the fact that he put in appearances on the Goodies and playing the xylophone, long before other people stopped taking themselves too seriously.
