Simplifying Magic Progression

Guys, I have been tinkiering with the spells a little bit.
I have been allowing the one scholar I have be able to learn a base spell eg: Hypnotism, then allow him to learn the follow on spells eg Ranged and Mass, for free. The requirements dont change for being able to cast the more pewerful spells, it just means that the scholar doesn't spend a feat (sorcerors boon to learn them), same goes for Wrarding spells and Telekinesis spells, What do you think?

IT does allow sorceror to become a master in one field of practice much sooner than before. Especially my Kothian 8th level hypnotist.

Am I ruining the game that way?

Well, what happens if someone wants to creat a Necromancer. I mean, Ranged and Mass Hypnotism normally requires an MAB of +5...that's a level 7 scholar. You say you have an 8th level Kothian Scholar, so he should be not only eligible by virtue of the MAB requirement.

I think you may be confused about sorcerer's boon. It allows a Sorcerer to pick up spells that go against his background, veering away from his normal spell selection.

For example, a Sorcerer with a pact has to either do research on his own with the whole Knowledge (arcana) check just like and independant sorcerer would, or he can call upon the demon with whom he has a pact and get new spoells that way. If he chooses sorcerer's boon He doesn't have to either of those things - he just gets any spell he meets the other pre-reqs for (like MAB and previous spell restrictions).

Makes the scholar a lot more powerful. My first instinct is to say that its unbalancing. Would you give every barbarian with Power Attack the Cleave and Great Cleave feats for free?

I don't think that I would do this IMC.

Wow I guess I never really read the Boon feat closely enough, I did not realize that you could learn outside of your sorcery styles.

Interesting concept about the spells vs. feats
Thanks.

BTW under the Adept feat; it seems to make a hypnotist into a pretty fast moving spell caster ie: he can knock off a few spells as a free action. Is he allowed to move and attack after that; my gut instinct is "No" but I am curious as to how you interpreted the rules. BTW I only have the original rrules, not the AE.

Thats because you can't. Sorcerous Boon lets you learn an advanced spell regardless of your background ie: you don't need to bother going to your master/demonic pact holder/study/whatever. You still have to meet all the normal prereqs including knowing the Style.

Yeah, the Sorcerous Boon feat is a prety good indication that one advance spell = one feat as far as balance purposes go.

You canot "knock off a few spells as a free action". You can cast one spell per round. This strict limit is for balance reasons. After you cast your spell as a free action though you still may use your remaining actions however you wish; move, attack, whatever.

Hope that helps.

The confusing thing is that any number of Free Actions can be made during a round, down to whatever the GM deems reasonable. However, only one spell can be cast per round period, but Adept allows you the equivalent of Shot on the Run being able to cast, move and do a standard action too. You are still always limited to one spell per turn, unless there's something that specifically says you get more.
