For a train that goes directly through the center of the Earth, the maximum speed is equivalent to Earth's first cosmic velocity, also known as its orbital velocity – ⁠that which will bring a rocket or other projectile into orbit around Earth (a slower projectile falling back to Earth, a faster one escaping Earth's gravity altogether) – ⁠about 7,900 meters per second (28,440 km/h), equivalent to Mach 23.2 at sea level and standard temperature.
To put some numbers in perspective, the deepest current bore hole is the Kola Superdeep Borehole with a true depth of 12,262 meters; covering the distance between London and Paris (350 km) via a hypocycloidical path would require the creation of a hole 111,408 metres deep. Not only is such a depth 9 times as great, but it would also necessitate a tunnel that passes through the Earth's mantle.

Plants are already amazing, they can use light from the Sun to make food for themselves, produce seeds to make new plants and most importantly they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen from their leaves which humans and animals need to breathe.

But now scientists have been adding tiny nanobionic sensors to plants so they can do even more incredible things from detecting explosives and discovering dangerous elements underground.

The experiments are part of a big research projects into plant nanobionics, which is technology that gives plants new skills.

Researchers have found that they can use plants to detect and monitor levels of arsenic underground.

Scientists at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) added nanosensors to the plants, which don't harm the plant, and which allow the sensors to monitor the levels of arsenic taken up by the plants from the soil.

The scientists are pleased with this new research because it is the first of its kind and it takes less time and equipment to find arsenic when using the plants.

Scientist Tedrick Thomas Salim Lew said: "We envision that this innovation will eventually see wide use in the agriculture industry and beyond."

That's not all, spinach plants can also be used for amazing innovations too.
achusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) also found that they can use spinach to detect landmines and communicate by email...sounds unbelievable doesn't it, let us explain.

By using nanotechnology engineers transform the spinach plant by putting electronic sensors on their leaves which helps the roots know if they come into contact with certain chemicals.

The spinach roots can detect nitroaromatics, which are normally found in explosives.

The plant then gives gives off a signal which is detected by an infrared camera, which can then send an email alert to scientists.

The Guns Cosmonauts Took to Space

In 1965, when two cosmonauts landed back on Earth in the snow-covered forest of Russia's Urals region, they feared their simple pistols wouldn't be enough to fight off the giant bears or hungry packs of wolves that roamed the area.

Although the men survived the experience without coming across any animals, the concern remained. How could cosmonauts better protect themselves in case they landed in a dangerous place?

That's how the primary survival weapon for Soviet cosmonauts, the TP-82, came to be. Created in consultation with a former cosmonaut, this weapon was designed specifically for the harsh environment in Soviet territory, not for fighting Americans.

According to documents and interviews of former cosmonauts, it was used by space explorers for almost 20 years. Dozens of astronauts visiting the International Space Station have practiced with it. Few have even spoken publicly about it.

Even though it's an open secret, to this day, the Russian Federal Space Agency still refuses to talk about the weapon. But, in case there's any doubt about the TP-82's existence, there's one on display in a Russian history museum.

2018 AG37 (nicknamed FarFarOut) is a distant trans-Neptunian object that was discovered 132.2 ± 1.5 AU (19.78 ± 0.22 billion km) from the Sun,[6] farther than any other currently observable known object in the Solar System.[3][7] Imaged in January 2018 during a search for the hypothetical Planet Nine,[8] the confirmation of this object was announced in a press release in February 2021 by astronomers Scott Sheppard, David Tholen, and Chad Trujillo. The object was nicknamed "FarFarOut" to emphasize its distance from the Sun.[3] With an estimated diameter of 400 km (250 mi), it is near the lower limit for a dwarf planet candidate.

At a very faint apparent magnitude of 25, only the largest telescopes in the world can observe it.[1] Being so far from the Sun, 2018 AG37 moves very slowly among the background stars and has only been observed nine times in the first two years.[5] It requires an observation arc of several years to refine the uncertainties in the approximately 1,000-year orbital period and determine whether it is currently near or at aphelion (farthest distance from the Sun). As of 2021 the nominal JPL Horizons solution has it coming to aphelion around the year 2158,[6] whereas Project Pluto shows it reached aphelion around 1951.[9]

The development of piston-aero engines were the dominant mechanism in determining fighter aircraft performance from 1939-1945.
This lecture focuses on key technical and organizational differences between the German and British efforts which had key impacts on both the airframe aerodynamic design and engine characteristics of both aircraft. The speaker presents a guided tour through the key difficulties experienced by German and British aviation engineers - using access to unique archival material, including the personal papers of Professor Willy Messerschmitt, and Ernest Hives, Technical Director at Rolls-Royce.

Calum Douglas worked in Germany for Toyota Motorsport GmbH applying Formula One engine technology to advanced technology demonstrator engines for Toyota Japan road cars division. Returning from Germany, he worked for Jaguar Land-Rover and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains and now runs an engine design consultancy. He began investigating piston engine development in wartime archival records and has spent the last five years researching and writing about it alongside working. He has been invited to speak worldwide to present his engine development historical research, from Scuderia-Ferrari Formula One in Italy, Rolls-Royce, the Royal Aeronautical Society, Renault-Sport and Mercedes AMG Formula-One engine and chassis technical centers. H1MIN: UGS MANTA - Hydrofoil midget submarine

An unusual late WWII design for the German Kriegsmarine was the midget submarine called UGS Manta. A hybrid design of different research bureaus, the idea was to provide a naval vessel with the capabilities of a midget submarine and the speed of a hydrofoil boat.

Hellmuth Walter, a German engineer who pioneered research on underwater air-independent propulsion (AIP) had built a submarine with remarkable underwater speeds. Similar technology was proposed for this design but due to competing interests and costs it was doubtful this could be viable even during wartime. Although an interesting design, it was never built and only a model remained of its existence.

On Thursday February 18th, 2021 the NASA Perseverance Rover will land on Mars. It is a wonderful robot, made out of steel and wire — but will future robots look like Perseverance? There is an emerging field of research on "soft robots", where the machines are flexible. These soft robots have many advantages over traditional robots — they're safer, lighter, more flexible and can change their shape and size.

NASA is investigating the use of soft robots for space missions. For future visits to Enceladus or Europa, a lander could cut a hole in the ice and then insert a compliant robot through the hole. This robot could then grow and change shape on the other side.
