Arcelin Mousqueton: An 1850s Breechloader with a Ludicrous Bayonet

The Arcelin system was a capping breechloader provisionally adopted by the French military in 1854. It was a bolt action system with a folding bolt handle, firing a paper cartridge. It impressed Emperor Louis Napoleon III in initial trials, and he directed it be used to arms his elite Cent Gardes bodyguard. More extensive testing showed that it suffered from insufficient obturation, and would would with extended use, eventually becoming so difficult to close that bolt handles would break. Its adoption was rescinded, and it was replaced by the Treuille de Beaulieu 9mm pinfire carbine in Cent Garden use within just a few years.

The most distinctive element of the Arcelin in use was its bayonet - a true full-length sword complete with brass handguard that could be clipped to the muzzle. This was chosen for its impressive length, although it would have been cumbersome if used beyond ceremonial guard duties.

Scariest Product of SHOT 2016: Trigger-Activated Light for Snipers

Eek! The idea of using pressure on the trigger to activate a light is just a really bad idea. That puts you one startling noise away from sympathetically firing the weapon into whatever you don't know is a target or not. We really hope nobody buys this.

Not everything needs to be battery powered.

I repurposed an aluminium spray can with manually operated air pump, originally intended for olive oil frying pan glazing, as self powered air mister, something I discovered while broiling in Californian dry heat, though with a smaller palm sized dispenser. And a second one with medical alcohol for greasy hands.

I guess I was ahead of my time.

"Kharkovchanka" - The Colossal Soviet Antarctic Cruisers

"The Kharkovchanka" - Russia's Colossal Antarctic Cruisers which have been continuously operating in some of the most extreme environments on Earth for over 50 years. Produced in Kharkiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialistic Republic and originally operated by USSR, the 'Харьковчанка' (literally 'Kharkiv Women'), these amazing Snow Cruisers were built in the late 1950s and featured everything a polar explorer could need in the field. In their half-century mission, they have crossed thousands of miles on Antarctic Ice, visited the South Pole, the pole of inaccessibility as well the dozens of outposts and research stations on the continent.

BMW today announced a number of updates to its in-car software experience during a VR press event, complete with a virtual drive through Munich to show off some of these features. These new updates will come to most recent BMWs that support the company’s Operating System 7 later this year — and new cars will already have them built in.

The automaker is now able to not only update the car’s infotainment system but virtually every line of code that’s deployed to the various computer systems that make up a modern vehicle. Because of this, the company is now also able to bring a couple of features to market that it has long talked about.

Perhaps most notable is the update to the program that allows you to subscribe to specific hardware features that may already be built into your car but that you didn’t activate when you bought the car — like heated seats or advanced driver assistance systems.

BMW has talked about this for a while, but it is now making this a reality. That means if you didn’t buy the heated steering wheel and seats, for example, your new BMW may now offer you a free three-month trial and you can then essentially buy a subscription for this feature for a set amount of time.
