I guess most people know, but just in case it saves someone some grief: a VPN isn't really going to do much if they're in your house. It doesn't hide browser history from someone with physical access to your device.

Much depends on the technical ability of the spouse, and the nature of the relationship, but if they have physical access to the machine, your IT security system requires physical access protection. e.g. "Hardware Keyloggers" are a thing.

I'm not going to go into securing the home environment iself as it's not directly related to IT.

I assume you're using disk encryption and not relying on the random overwriting the SSD does (microsoft's bitlocker on windows, apple's filevault on apple)? Everyone knows from the news even the FBI have trouble getting data out of Apple devices but it does require that you turn on all the security features. Bitlocker _probably_ works.

Once it's in the Cloud, it's probably there for eternity, regardless how encrypted it is, so anything you want to remain relatively secure, has to be stored locally; science fiction writers were pretty prescient, when they mentioned self perpetuating viruses corrupting databases to change or eradicate specific information.

And if you have anything to really hide, go the whole hog and get a burner phone that's registered under and paid for by a shell company; at some point, the essential hardware can be fitted onto an sd card, which can be slipped into your regular phone and can be walled off.

Just to ensure there is no confusion, FileVault and Bitlocker are not cloud services.

FileVault gives you the option of using an Apple account for the encryption keys, but that's an option that's presented to the user in way that's very hard to misunderstand.

To be honest, if you're using Windows or Apple, you already trust one of either Microsoft or Apple implicity - or you'd be on Linux if trust was important.
