It's a compromise between reliability, capacity and speed of reloading.

You could double up the tubes, and/or extend them, but that makes the weapon unwieldy and much more heavier.
 
Tubes extensions don't add that much weight, until you reach multiple tube configurations.

Its also more awkward to use a pump with box mag in the middle of everything, semi doesn't have a problem with it.

With RAW there really is no reason to not use a automatics and semi-automatics even though we all know that revolvers and pump action are meant to be significantly more reliable.

What about a fumble roll? - roll a natural 2 with any firearm and you need to test gun combat - failure means it jams for a number of rounds equal to the negative effect (assuming that you are given leisure to spend that time unjamming it):

Archaic black powder weapon test is Formidable 12+
Auto weapon firing fully auto test is Difficult 10+
Auto weapon firing burst test is Standard 8+
Auto or semi-auto weapon firing single shots test is Routine 6+
Revolver, pump or bolt action test is Easy 4+
 
One thing a revolver permits is mix and match ammunition, and an electronic one gets the cylinder to rotate to the bullet you want; I think Logan's Run made me think about that.

Dredd's pistol has two separate magazines. I cam't recall if they are compartmentalized.
 
Which should be available if you get a revolver built at TL 9 rather than TL4?

And if you have a neural comm and the intelligent weapon add on you can tell it what ammo to load by thought alone and it spins the barrel in microseconds.

Isn't the MGT2 CSC a bit lacking in ammo types though?

None of the tranq and gas rounds which in CT you could load up a snub pistol with.
 
And rather than PCs automatically going for ACR's and static axes as giving best bang for the Cr1000 and TL12 weapon benefit limit why not give them a budget to customise any eligible weapon and allow any add-ons they dream up that sound feasible and within the cost and TL parameters?
 
Incidentally the book Revelation Space by Alistair Reynolds has the coolest ship's locker - it is basically a cupboard with an intelligent interface, a database of every weapon known to man and a 3D printer that will knock out the weapon you choose in a few minutes...
 
Add robotic arms and you can have it assembled as well.

ACR would by it's descriptor be considered a combat firearm.

By the interstellar age, a semi automatic carbine wouldn't be considered a threat to the military, or possibly law enforcement.

Armour piercing ammunition or that designed to cause maximum internal damage would be a gray area.
 
There's battlefield threat level and then there is general security threats to personnel who don't stomp around in full combat armour or battledress all day every day...

And the absence of a hit location system elides that probably not even TL15 police tac squads will be wearing full body armour and TL4 shotgun pellets can make a real mess of your unprotected legs or face.
 
Just checked my copy of Revelation Space and mis-remembered - the Warchive does have a database of every weapon available and can nano-fabricate any item you want but also has a very large room warehousing thousands of ready-made weapons.
as well as an annoyingly obsequious robot shop assistant.

Weapons are delivery systems.

Edged,blunt and energy weapons are easily recharged, relatively speaking.

Making bullets probably occupies most of a three dee printer's time; though prior to an expected firefight, you might want to accumulate a couple of rounds.

Scientists Think Cockroach Milk Could Be The Next Superfood, And We Wish We Were Kidding

An international team of scientists sequenced a protein crystal located in the midgut of cockroaches in 2016. The reason?

It's more than four times as nutritious as cow's milk and the researchers think it could be the key to feeding our growing population in the future.


Although most cockroaches don't actually produce milk, Diploptera punctate, which is the only known cockroach to give birth to live young, has been shown to pump out a type of 'milk' containing protein crystals to feed its babies.

The fact that an insect produces milk is pretty fascinating – but what fascinated researchers is the fact that a single one of these protein crystals contains more than three times the amount of energy found in an equivalent amount of buffalo milk (which is also higher in calories than regular cow's milk).

Clearly milking a cockroach isn't the most feasible option, so an international team of scientists headed by researchers from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India decided to sequence the genes responsible for producing the milk protein crystals to see if they could somehow replicate them in the lab.

"The crystals are like a complete food - they have proteins, fats and sugars. If you look into the protein sequences, they have all the essential amino acids," said Sanchari Banerjee, one of the team, in an interview with the Times of India back in 2016.


Not only is the milk a dense source of calories and nutrients, it's also time released.

As the protein in the milk is digested, the crystal releases more protein at an equivalent rate to continue the digestion.

"It's time-released food," said Subramanian Ramaswamy, who led the project.

"If you need food that is calorifically high, that is time released and food that is complete. This is it."

It's important to point out that this dense protein source is definitely never going to be for those trying to lose weight, and probably isn't even required for most western diets, where we are already eating too many calories per day.

But for those who struggle to get the amount of calories required per day, this could be a quick and easy way to get calories and nutrients.

"They're very stable. They can be a fantastic protein supplement," said Ramaswamy.

Now the researchers have the sequence, they are hoping to get yeast to produce the crystal in much larger quantities - making it slightly more efficient (and less gross) than extracting crystals from cockroach's guts.
