ship damage how to...

newbe here. I was woundering if any one could tell me or has figured out how to calculate ship damage. I tryed many failed attempts to figure it out and can not. I figure it has to do some thing with the tonnage of the ship and armor??? but not sure. the reason is I would like to create stats for some ships not in the rules. such as the IJN Akagi, USN Lexington, HMS Empress of Britian, APA-27 George Clymer and more. I figured out crew, speed, target etc.

Can anyone help?

Have a look in DM's rules for Victory on the River they might help you figure it out

they are at the bottom of this link page

Thanks for the site juggler69uk. It is intresting however, his formulas do not work for VaS. I tryed a few. His formula are for Civil war era ships and are not compatable with VaS. However if DM, or anyone else out there knows of the formula for VaS I would really like to see it. I am itching to figure out damage for several ships which I have minis for and would like to see in the game.

Equals full load or Deep Displacement / 1,000, rounded up

The basic rule is 1 point of damage per 1000 tons for the first 30000 tons.

Then there is 1 point of damage per 1500 tons above 30000 tons up to 60000 tons.

Finally there is 1 point of damage per 3000 tons above 60000 tons.

I ought to add, of course, that there are a plethora of new stats coming in the supplement, which is under development at the moment.

Thanks DM this is what I was looking for. :D

I have been hearing a lot of this supplement and look forward to seeing it whenever it comes out. However I do not believe it will have stats for a lot of the Auxiliary ships that were used and the Liners for those odd games.

Two more things, do you know if targeting is based on the length of the ship and how is armour worked out? Do you take into account the actual thickness of the ships armour to come up with the statistic?

Thanks again.

target number is based on overall length:

<500' = 6+
>700' = 4+
in between = 5+

Armour is based on maximum thickness:

2" or less : 2+
3"-4" : 3+
5"-12" : 4+
13"-14" : 5+
15"+ : 6+

(although this can be skewed by ships that have extremely limited armour in specific locations, conning towers being a prime culprit; if we were starting from scratch I'd probably go for a more meaningful measure such as thickest belt or turret armour; in most cases it wouldn't make that much difference)

DM,

Thanks so much. :D

This helps out a lot. I will post some stats for the odd ball ships as soon as I complete them. And when the supplement comes out I will post whatever does not come out in the book. That way players will have many choices for Aux. ships and such.

Thanks again

Hello DM

I am curious as why in the rule book why the Italian heavy cruiser Zara is listed as 3+ armor. Or is their some reason it is. May be in the supplemental rule the 150mm belt armor makes it 4+ armor.

Just curious.

Thank you

Rod

There are several possible reasons, including

1) its a mistake,
2) someone applied a bit of thought and decided 4+ was too much for a cruiser

AFAIk its not changed in the supplement.

There is an extensive list of new ships developed for the supplement, almost certainly too many to include in the final publication. Any that don't make the cut will probably make their way onto a website shortly after the supplement hits the streets.

Thank you for the reply. I got to play my second game today and coach two other players. With the difference on 1+ on the armor for the Zara I do not think it will matter in the great scheme of things.

Needing revision?

new stats DM ?

for what may I ask, redone ones or additional ?

The ships that needed stats to be revised got revised. All aircraft have been totally redone, new planes have been added. As a ballpark estimate 80 pages of new ships.
