Annatar Giftbringer
Emperor Mongoose
Greetings,
I've started looking at ship combat, and ran into some questions...
Evade software. From what I can tell, simply running evade software gives everyone -1 to hit the ship. The next part however confuses me...
"The ship can make a number of dodges each round equal to the listed number. "
I understand that dodge is a reaction, and is limited by thrust and available reactions. Let's say I reserve 3 thrust for reactions, and my initiative allows me 3 reactions.
Every successful dodge gives the enemy -2 to hit, which combines with the passive -1 from the evade program, right?
Assume my ship computer runs evade/2. Does this mean that the ship may make 2 dodges in addition to the three the pilot has available, or that the ship may perform 2 of the 3 dodges, or even that evade/2 allows the pilot up to two dodges per round, the same way that jump control/2 is required to be able to make a jump 2? The last one would mean that a ship without evade-software can never evade attacks?
Follow-up question: if I shut down the evade program (my computer rating is too low for evade and fire control and I wanna kill stuff) would I only lose the passive -1 or would I become unable to evade at all also?
Next question: how often can I change active programs for the ship's computer?
Let's say my ship has a computer with rating 25. I run intellect (rating 10) leaving me with 15 rating for other software. How often can I change active programs? I guess I can't run fire control/2 (rating 10) and switch to evade/2 (15) when reacting, since they occur in the same phase. Or? A human pilot can both pilot the ship and react/dodge without penalties.
Can I switch to auto-repair/1 (10) during the ship action phase, since the fire control-program is useless during this phase, and then back to fire control at the beginning of next round? Is a skill check needed to change programs?
What happens if I shut down the intellect program in order to free up computer rating? Would I need to dedicate one crew member to manually using the computer for the loaded programs, or can I instruct the intellect program to assist with aiming (fire control) and close intellect software to boot up evade and then just keep going? What would it take to reboot intellect?
And finally...
Is there any way to make the computer take care of lock-on and electronic warfare during the ship action phase?
That's it for now, more will surely follow!
