Shem - Meadow/plains versus desert?

On the map, Shem is virtually all desert, but Western Shem is supposed to be plains (thus the Meadow Shemite) - what's up with this? And where is the "border" of these two areas far to one side or the other, near the middle or what (not looking for anything exact, but is Akbitan east or west of desert?)?

Looks like the West is *generally* plains, but you could still claim some areas to be desert too...
