Sending my HG to Mongoose for exchange - what extra to get?

PoppySeed45

Banded Mongoose
So, as you may know, Mongoose has a deal where they will replace a messed up copy of High Guard with a redone version, AND give you another book free of charge, as long as it's the same price as High Guard was (is that right?). Very decent of them I think.

With that in mind, I plan on finally sending this thing tomorrow, and I'm wondering, which of the books are good? I'll give a list, but I want to ask the experts here, since I'm weary of Mongoose (mostly thanks to Mercenary - it is, for me, horrible on several levels; the Patrons 1st edition wasn't so hot either; HG was okay though, and the main book outstanding).

So, here's what's equal or lower in price to HG (according to Mongoose's site); not interested in the LBBs though:

1. Scout
2. Psion
3. Agent
4. Scoundrel
5. Merchant Prince
6. Dilettante
7. Robots
8. Traders and Gunboats
9. Fighting Ships
10. 1001 Characters
11. Cybernetics
12. Merchants and Crusiers
13. Animal Encounters
14. Dynasty

Of that list, I'm particularly interested in Dynasty, Psion, and Scoundrel. Possibly Cybernetics. So I'd like to hear about those.

However, if you've commentary about any of the others, please pipe in! Convince me to get (or to avoid like the plague) something!

If you ever plan on using Psionics, get Psion. Scoundrel is good, but Agent is better. Cybernetics is a really fun read and enhances all the other career books. Dilettante is my favourite career book. Dynasty is cool and can actually be a stand-alone game, but it's better for GMs than for players.

Hmm...interesting. I'm leaning towards Psion because, naturally, I've got either Mass Effect or Star Wars on the brain (as well as a bunch of other ideas, like, I don't know, Iron Empires and Psychologists?).

Dynasty interests me of course because I like that sort of thing. I enjoyed Reign's take on such, for example, and even Strand of Fate's had some merit (organization rules I mean). So, makes me interested as well.

Hard to choose between them!

I would go with...

8. Traders and Gunboats

Since your going to be playing Traveller which is a space ship based game, it might be good to have that resource at your fingertips to use.

Hadn't considered that. Makes me think...

Just to let you all know, I did it, and I choose Scoundrel (that's what I put in the note I left in the package anyway). Ought I to email someone so they know it's coming? Or is my note in the package enough (and that I wrote "Book Return" on the front of the envelope)?

They'll know. They probably got a lot of book returns. I'm not sure if I have the bad HG book or not.

Well, I don't know the other mistakes, but mine had the Merc Table of Contents in the front, rather than the High Guard one.

That's the initial printing that they where replacing. Also page references still had the XX's.

And some of the font choices make the words run together.

Still got mine.

Ah yeah, you're right! I can remember there being a line or two that ran together in a small font on some page or other.

In any case, mine's off today! So, should get stuff soonish!
