I always imagined ships (going waaay back to CT in high school) where built like subs, an outer shell and an inner 'pressure hull' with many of the pipes, etc running in space between...in MGT, thats where I imagine repair drone scurrying, rather than doing the R2D2 thing on the outside...
armor and such is outer hull, self-sealing inbetween, etc...
I was watchiing on history (or was it discovery?) Deconstruct program where they where dismantling a soviet typhoon and that is how I always imagined traveller ships to be like.
