Second Question

That one isn't so bad. Had someone tell me recently their computer is running better after they replaced the monitor...

Though automatic resoultion/color depth changes can make a noticeable perfomance difference - this is probably just another case of perception being 9/10ths of 'Reality'!

All four cores in the one I'm using now run at 100%...

Another consideration of ship computers vs. a laptop is durability. The ship computers are not the exact same hardware, but built for dependability, rigors of space travel, etc. Several back-up systems and hardended components. Dropping a laptop can break it. You don't want that same fragility in your ship computer.
(Yeah - no dropping ship computers - :D)

An enjoyable sci-fi book I have has the ship computer (MESS) download itself into a plate shaped object to protect itself!

Can, but the claim was a bit more then just that could account for.

Same person was talking about needing a graphics card and CPU upgrade for pogo.com... (GeForce 9400 and triple core CPU currently). Though he hasn't mentioned that lately.

So it looks like I will be installing "Fire Control Computers" and "Engineering Computers" as backups so that I can run all the Intellect/1 and Expert/3 programs (to get Skill-2) on my Megafreighter.

My megafreighter is designed to replace the one on pages 140&141 in HG. It is 100 Ktons, J4, 1G designed to ply the X-boat routes.

I am trying to keep the crew numbers down. Straight out of HG, it has something like 500 crew. But I want to reduce the Crew Size to under 50. I plan on using the Intellect/Expert programs to replace all of the gunners and most of the engineers, command and service crew. I am considering Servitor Robots and maintenance Robots as well.

The idea of a HUGE ship floating through space with only a couple dozen people on board is too appealing.

Hmm ... strange: A computer Model 7 is a device of TL 15, has a rating of
35 and costs 30 MCr., a computer Model Core/3 is a device of TL 9, has
a rating of 40 and costs 12 MCr. ... this enables me to replace one Model 7
with two Model Core/3, more than doubling the software capacity while sa-
ving 6 MCr. ... somehow this does not seem right ... :?

Yep - but then the Core/3s couldn't support a J-4 to J-6... (not that I'm supporting the mechanics progressions in HG ;) )

[FYI for others - he is referring to HG Capital Ship computers]

Sounds pretty cool - and having more seperate computers/dedicated automa on board replacing crew rather than a main system sounds better anyway!

Oh most definitely - they need at least a high end Xeon and an SLI rig for that  - maybe they should triple their memory

I'm sure I could hook them up! For the right price

[Sorry for all the seperate posts - having timeout issues with MGP website today ironically!]
