Screen Effect 0?

In order to use a screen, according to HG2e, "The gunner must succeed at a Gunner (screen) check against an attack and, if successful, he will reduce the damage of the attack, after the armour has been accounted for, by the number of dice rolled by the screen (as noted in its description), multiplied by the Effect of his check."

However, what happens on roll of 8 (the default target number)? It's a successful roll but the effect is 0 and anything multiplied by 0 is 0.

I find that a successful roll that does nothing to, well, not be a success after all.

My two ideas are:

  • Minimum effect of 1, so even a roll of 8 is still the straight-up die roll
  • Effect of 0 is x.0.5, so half as effective as an effect of 1

I'm partial to option 1, since it requires less maths.

I would prefer this, to simplify the math just roll 1D instead of 2D × 0,5.

The one problem with that is each screen installed is 1D x effect, not 2D x effect. But an effect of 0 being D3 instead of D6 would work, too.

It's just the Deflector screens that prevents 1D. It's also half the size of the other screens. Just make the Deflector 10 dT per unit like the other screens, and it will prevent 2D like the other screens.

Using the Deflector also more or less obsoletes Dampers and Meson Screens.
