Flynn's Guide to Magic in Traveller
Written by Jason "Flynn" Kemp

Have you ever wanted to play in a Traveller campaign that blurs the line between fantasy and science fiction? Have your characters discovered your favorite fantasy campaign setting off the main trade routes? Are you interested in developing your own Fantasy version of our favorite 2d6-based open gaming system? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, then Flynn's Guide to Magic in Traveller is for you!

Introduce unlimited eldritch power to your Traveller campaign setting with Flynn's Guide to Magic in Traveller! Within this product, you'll find a complete skill-based magic system, that can be used for either free-form spellcasting or formulaic rituals, depending on the needs of your setting. In addition, Flynn's Guide to Magic in Traveller also provides you with rules for magic item creation, an extensive list of 150+ sample spells, new skills and a complete Mage career path. You'll find everything you need to add the power of magic to your Traveller campaign!

This product supplements the 2D6 open-gaming system presented in the Traveller System Reference Document, and requires the use of the Traveller main rules book, which is available from Mongoose Publishing.

Congrats! Though from the rules (most of them are in the preview on Lulu) it's interesting that you didn't go for a psionic-type system. Any particular reason for that?

I went with the current approach in regards to a magic system because the interaction between the various Magic skill specializations allow for a greater diversity of spells and spell-like abilities. The core of the system really lies in the enhancements under each skill specialization, which are outlined under the Magic skill chapter. I think a psionic-style system would have been more restrictive and thus applicable to fewer campaign settings.

In other words, I wanted options without going overboard with a limited set of actions per magic skill, which is what a psionics-style system would have created in my hands, and this system should give players more options.

Hope This Help,
Flynn

I like what I see - and I've always felt that the "powers of the mind" approach is kind of a jarring modernism in actual fantasy as opposed to "Secret Science Fiction" settings -which traveller+psionics handles fine.

Downloading as we speak..;)

Ditto.....

Well I just ordered my copy of your book and am most happy to get it when I do. Hey Flynn what ever happened to your planned Robot book?

Penn

Well, first he has to start at the basics, orginal designs.

Golems and Zombies (undead).

Then after he gets the hang of making those, I am sure he will start with room sized computers that can 2+2.

So I figure it will be middle of next year when we see Robots. :D

Life happened, and then I thought, "Why don't I wait until Civilian Vehicles comes out and use the official design system?" I'm still waiting. :)

It won't be too long, maybe two or three months, and I hope to have Flynn's Guide to Robots ready.

With Regards,
Flynn

Flynn,

Just a quick note to say I'm liking this lots. The two spellcasting systems seem to capture the flavor of both period magic and FRPG magic very well. Lots of good simple options for tuning the campaign type, as well. Still reading......

Only comment thus far ? I'm going to call Philosophy(Archana) "Gnosis" instead. But then, I'm a geek...;).

I have just finished reading this product and I must say that I like it very much.

It is very flexible and easily adapted to whatever "power level" the Referee desires.

What I particularly like is the separation of the knowledge of magic [Philosophy(Arcana)] and the ability to use magic [Magic (specialty)]

I have read many books about a wizard with great knowledge, but little actual power and it is nice that I could now play one!

VERY WELL DONE SIR!

Very very nice. The missing element from being able to run a good 'sword & sorcery' campaign.

Is it available in PDF form (and I don't mind watermarked PDFs)

(before anyone gets on my butt for that comment, all of this is fantasy and make believe, Traveller, anything GURPS, D&D etc. The old term in the days of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and company was sword&sorcery)

Yes it is an option on the purchase page.

I am more likely to give you shit about living in Spokane before using the term "sword&sorcery".

An with that bit of thought I think it is a better descriptor than Fantasy for the genre. And we are Traveller fans so we are that sorta of weenies, with the sad devotion to Kipling et al.....

let me add... a "fantasy" bestiary.

I'd like lots of more likely animals from modern Earth, so we have dogs and cats and panthers and all that mundane goodness to go along with all the fantastical monsters players need to experience first-hand.

Thanks... and give me all the shit you want about living in Spodunk Washington. The gaming community sucks rife with power struggles, personal politics, game store owners having the mindset that because they were first no one should open a store and compete against them (and that customer service is an expense you can do without and survive).

As for the books...yeah got it. ordered the module, the alien construction thingy, and the magic thingy (how's that for technical?)

Again, thanks.

Damn Sorry Merlin's used to be cool.... 205+ years ago, but that was in the lens of driving up from Pullman with my cousin.

Sword&Sorcery is now going to be my Default for fantasy..... It make so much more sense.

Christmas 6 years ago.... I think.

And for the public record, Eastern Washington is the bee's knees, I just have too much family in area, add in the number of Ex's who moved north, I pretty much stay out of the area above the 45th parallel.
