S&P Storming the Dinner Table Judge Dredd RPG conversion

Silverback

Mongoose
Just read Marc Farrimonds article in Signs & Portents Wargamer #37 for resolving Judge Dredd rpg combat by converting characters to GoMC1 terms.

Whilst a useful article one area that may require changing is the use of Strength to determine a characters Resilience (Res) score. Marc suggests that Strength should be used for this - shouldn't this be derived from either Constitution or Defence Value instead?

I think that, if you choose to use Constitution instead of Strength, the calculation for converting to Resilience should remain the same.

EDIT: I think Reflex Save may be a better option. See post below.

If you choose to use Defence Value instead (which seems to make more sense?) just divide the characters DV by 2 and round up.

EDIT: Looked at this a little more and, rather than using Defence Value, the characters Reflex Save divided by 2 seems to give a better conversion. Tried this out using the stats for Judge Dredd (d20) and compared the results to DotS stats and it gave an identical score!

Vehicles

Resilience
To calculate a vehicles Resilience score multiply its Damage Reduction by 0.75 and round-off.

Agility
I'd suggest that, if it's armed with weapons, the Ag score should be based on it's occupants score and possibly apply a modifier based on it's d20 size penalty. Needs further investigation and playtesting!

Size Penalties
The following penalities are based on the assumption that the vehicle is using a fixed weapon system.

Medium: +0 to Ag
Large: +1 to Ag
Huge: +2 to Ag
Gargantuan: +3 to Ag

On Large, Huge and Gargantuan vehicles perps may be firing from open windows and/or turrets. Subtract 1 from the listed Ag penalties above is firing from a turret and subtract 2 if firing from a window. The Ag modifier can't drop below 0.

Firing from windows counts as Light Cover.
Firing from turrets counts as Heavy Cover.

In both the above cases where a miss occurs apply the attack to the vehicle instead.

Speed
Speed should be converted as normal.

Suggested guidelines for vehicle movement rates

Small: up to 12" (small bikes & personal transport)
Medium: up to 10" (small cars, large bikes)
Large: up to 9" (large cars, small vans)
Huge: up to 8" (large vans, trucks, armored vehicles)
Gargantuan: up to 7" (mo-pads)

Note: The Lawmaster is listed as having a Spd of just 10" which, to my mind, infers that's the safest top speed that the bike can operate at in street level encounters. Remember that most characters only move up to 5" and a Lawmaster ridden flat-out could far, far exceed more than twice a 'mans' running speed.

Hits Needs further investigation and playtesting!
Depends on vehicle size (?)

Divide by indicated number and round off.

Small: 5
Medium: 10
Large: 15
Huge: 20 - 40
Gargantuan: 40 - 60

Turning Circle Needs playtesting!

Multiply the vehicles current speed by its size category to calculate the turning radius in inches. In the case of articulated vehicles reduce the effective size of the vehicle (for turning purposes only) by one category to a minimum size of Large.

Small: 1
Medium: 2
Large: 4
Huge: 8
Gargantuan: 16

The vehicle should be moved using its centre as its pivot point. For articulated vehicles use the pivot point between the power unit and trailing unit.

I'll be posting initial vehicle conversions here. The listed Ag score is the perps penalty when firing a fixed weapon system (where applicable) from the listed vehicle.

Sounds great to me good work. I was originally going to use Con for Res but went for Str as a more generic all round stat, though either could work well. DV will also work too.

Good job :)

I've been thinking about how vehicles should be handled for street gangs and wondered whether they should be treated as potential game objectives rather than actual purchases.

For example you may have a street level skirmish that happens to have say 2d6 vehicles present in random locations. If a gang member(s) chooses to operate a vehicle they must spend one round getting into the vehicle and starting the engine i.e. they forego a full rounds worth of movement and action(s).

They can then drive/pilot the vehicle and any passengers may elect to fire ranged weapons from the 'windows'.

I'd forgotten about these...! Might give them a try in the next week or so.

I quite like the idea of them being pricey equipment - extend the arms race into transport.

I'm interested to see what a gang with two vehicles is like against one with none - how easy is it to negate their usage, etc?
