S&P SST board game

Lt Gorman

Mongoose
I'm very surprised there has been no topic raised about the article in Signs and Portents!

I thought that Carl W's game was really good. It has the a definite Space Hulk-type appeal to it, and I reckon (if the second part is as good as the first!) will be an interesting beer and pretzels type game.

I'm probably going to be using my Cap Troopers and the Doom board game tiles, rather than dedicated SST print-outs.

If Carl W is listening - well done! My only Q is how many warrior bugs will I need to get a decent game going? I'm an MI only player, and want to hold a few decent games of this. I was thinking about picking up a box of warriors just for this purpose.

I didn't even know! I'll have a look later :) . How are those DooM board tiles? I wanted to buy the thing and its expansion set but wasn't sure of the scale or anything, any help Gorman?

Thanks for the heads up. I have just printed them and given them a brief look over. They look great! Very Spacehulk. Just the kind of thing I have been puzzling over myself.

Rather than using the RPG rules, with all their complications from being a d20 system, this would be great to run a fast paced lite Rpg.

I realise the full rules are not out yet, but I was wondering whether there would be more classes e.g. Marauder, NEo-dog handler etc?

Also, although the new rules use squares I presume it would not be difficult to tranfer it to inch measurements when outside of buildings? After all, it would be a shame to not be able to fight outside using my existing terrain etc.

I would just like to say thank you to Carl W for creating it!

How about printing a net of squares, to enable fighting outside? Am pretty sure there were some squared outside maps for Aliens...

roughneck GIR-

The Doom tiles are a great scale for RPGs! They are about 25-30mm scale, as are the figures (although these are a rubbery plastic; some people say they are okay painted and can be used for RPG stuff but I don;t personally like them that much!!). The game also comes with a avreity of tiles for boxes, computer consoles, vents, etc., which allows you to set up a decent base or colony.

I really liked the rules for this SST game though - but I think that we're likely to see only a "basic" set. I reckon with a magazine game like this you can easily expand it for the full complement of bugs, and also more exotic MI careers (neo-dog handlers, etc).

Wow! It's great to see such a positive response to the game. My friends and I (who were a great help during play-testing) certainly had fun developing it.

I have ideas for various expansions, including new classes, equipment, missions and maps - including a few outdoor ones.

Hopefully, with positive feedback like this, Ian will be interested in publishing some more material. :D

So far, only the key rules have been printed. Next month's S&P will contain all the board sections, along with doors and tokens for the game.

There will also be two missions for people to play - one set in a deserted outpost, the other in a bug tunnel network.

I'm really looking forwards to the next issue of S&P!! This game really gives a good chance to dust down the SST miniatures, in anticipation of the Evo launch. Also the sort of really straight forward game you can play in a couple of hours or so.

But how many bugs should I buy to play the game Alpha? And are you covering just the basic bug types in the S&P rules?

Assuming that Ian uses all of the material I wrote for the game, the next issue of S&P should provide stats for:

blaster bugs
blister bugs
cliff mites
control bugs
brain bugs
firefries
guard bugs
hopper bugs
infiltrator bugs
mantis bugs
warrior bugs

There's certainly enough for a few games there!

I made up a series of 3-D corridors to use with SST troopers and the smaller Bug units in another "tribute" mod of SST to the old Space Hulk, but with Carl's story out currently it won't make much sense to submit it for awhile as it would be somewhat redundant. The main difference between my concept and Carl's was that I wanted the 3-D feel of the maze-like tunnels. Carl's is more true to the tile use of the old game and "cleaner" in playing. His and mine can both be used to simulate both the inside of a starship as well as the inside of a planetary base (such as a laboartory on oh say, Pluto? ). I made up a pile of the various sections using straights, corners, tees, and rooms. I use office clips to attach each section to the next to make a complete maze. I did these in a spurt last Summer, then fell off onto other projects. Congrats to Carl on getting his project into S&P and I'll be interested to see the second part of the article. Great minds think alike, heh.

Can I have the cardstock templates so I can print them out?

I made them up using MS Publisher, which isn't an extremely popular graphics program (but fit my budget better than others out there). I was planning to convert the graphics into a PDF or a JPG and include it in the article when published. I'll see what I can do over the next few days and try to get it to you.
