RuneQuest up in a poll on RPGnet

Voted for Runequest.

Classic RPGnet, the posts don't even get off the first page before people start complaining that Exalted isn't on there. God I hate that place.

I am very surprised that Pahtfinder and Warhammer 3e are below RQ.

Of course less than 400 people have answered, so statistically we can conclude nothing yet.

That's probably because pathfinder is silly, it's 3.5 with more flaws, but they told us they fixed it so we better believe they did.

And Warhammer 3e, well I haven't tried it, but from what I hear it costs a ton, since you need a new book for every class you get. And it felt more like playing a tabletop game than a roleplaying game.

But this really isn't representative. Most people probably haven't played half of those games. Anyway, my vote goes to runequest for being the best system on the list. I have only played Pathfinder, and Runequest, but I hear good things about 4th edition.

Still surprises me. From what I've heard Pathfinder is the big hitter nowadays.

The last time we talked 4ed, you'd heard one great thing about 4ed - and a gazillion bad things. What changed? ;)

When 4E came out, it was good. It was all about the race, class and powers you chose, rather than the magic items you had (magic items are way less powerful in 4E, good for DM's, bad for players). It was insanely easy to DM, but very hard to kill PC's due to healing surges (PC healing ability). It was fun to play. However, with the errata that never seemed to end and the changes they made the game should now be 4.5E or 5E! As an example, all attacks were meant to be rolled for, no auto hits yes Magic Missile I'm talking about you. Now they've gone back to how it used to be, an auto hit spell that now has crap damage.

Going over to RPGNET now to pu my 2 bobs worth in!

Well, considering that all the stuff comes from the same person. I might not put too much into the statements.

Also, my immediate response to 4th edition was that it must suck. But as I had never actually given the system a chance, I actually think I judged it prematurely.
One of the things I've heard about it that's good is that Powergaming wont put you out of the group's general power level, and the role based combat system makes sure everybody has something to do in a combat.
The fact that the sorcerer feels like a sparkly archer, and the barbarian feels like a rogue with a two hander, makes it less desirable though. The system just has a very big focus on rules, which is in stark contrast to RQII (Which I can now say is the best system I've tried), where there's a focus on the spirit of the game.

Regarding the PF result.
I regularly run PF. It's a pretty good system and all the rules are easily accessible in one book.
I'm not saying it's my favourite system, as it isn't, I do have some gripes about it, but it's very popular and easy to get players for, unlike MRQ2.

MRQ2 IS my favourite system but it's harder to get players for it as it's not as well known.

So whilst I voted Runequest, I also like PF and whilst it has it's faults it's a serviceable RPG.

I decided that I would give 4E a fair shake. While 3E wasn't my favorite, I overall liked the system and found it fun and playable. To me 4E is like taking 3E, stripping all the best elements from it and smearing it in beer-poops.

Unlike 3E, 4E is rigid and barely customizable. It is also like they tried to create a video game like Warcraft and make in pencil and paper. Doing this is foolish as anyone that wants a game like this might as well be playing a video game. The strength of a tabletop rpg is that you make it your own and you have a living arbitrator that can ensure that anything you want to do can happen within reason.

MRQII is by far the best system out there overall, especially when you are considering game balance, playability and combat represented in such away that is NOT like a comic book. I see no reason to play anything else. [/quote]
