Runequest Advice

I'm an ex Runequest player of the original game. I haven't played for many, many years but I still have the game and I've been thinking of introducing my children and my nephew and niece to it as I think that games are a lot more sociable and "brain developing" than a lot of the computer games they play. There are also quite a few uncles and aunts with D&D experience in the background who I know would love the chance to help out!

What I'm wondering is what age is suitable for them to start would you say? Also would I better to go for the new rule set and materials?

Thanks for your help

fwiw, I started my youngest daughter on a RQ derivative (a sort of 2.5) when she was 10-11 and she loved it (the first scenario from the first setting she ran was published in S&P in the end). If I was doing it now, I'd run with the new rules as (a) they're still readily available and (b) they're fairly simple, still.

SimpleQuestis simpler again but still based on the RQ rules... that might work, too.

Thanks for mentioning SimpleQuest Half-bat! I've found the game works very well with children during the playtest games. We had a first time young roleplayer in one the playtest games at my local games store and she enjoyed it so much that she was pestering he sister, who originally brought her along, to bring her again.

Quick update, putting the game together now as we speak; for a Continuum Release, which is around August 1st. The pdf version will be free via d101games.co.uk and a print on demand version will be available via Lulu.com. I'll have some printed copies at Continuum were me and Neil Ford will be running games of SQ all weekend.

That's my intention.

But bear with me while I sort out getting an account with Rpgnow or one of the other RPG pdf places, or working out how to do it via my own site.

I'll post more concrete details nearer the release...stay tuned :)

Damn...posted that with my 'Hearts in Glorantha' head on (which is not surprising since I've been working on that today).

The SQ pdf will be available before the 1st of August, hopefully sometime within the first two weeks of July, when its done :)

so soon now :)

Great to hear, I look forward to seeing it.

I've been playing MRQ in a LotR setting with my two boys, now 11 and 7 for about a year, and they love it. Admittedly I did mod the rules a bit by rounding everything to 5% increments, using d20, only having 1 combat action/turn, etc, but otherwise its all pretty much the same.

Main reason for the d20 wasn't because they couldn't handle d100 but because I had started them on DnD first and it made the transition easier. They much prefer RQ to DnD :)

cheers, Ari
