Rules

The rules, scenerios, limited fleet list, and counters are in the revised box set which retails at $49.95 US. The Sky Full of Stars book has a lot more ships and some additional rules. The Armaggedon book has some ships, more rules, some rule changes, and some FAQ. There is also a $10.00 rule book, which I believe covers the same rules in the revised box set, with some Narn and Centauri counters.

If your playing with a group that has all of the above and just want to get the rules down buy the $10.00 book.

You should buy the Revised Edition Boxset which includes counters. Then SFOS, then Armagedon.
The $10 starter book only includes the Narn vs Centauri and is a simplified version of the game.

Thanks guys. Right now, it's just me and a friend playing, but I did buy the $10 book to introduce him (as he's never played a miniatures game before). A question though: will the 2nd edition book have all the rules changes?

The investment to get into the game is very high right now. Revised set £30, SFOS £25, Argageddon £15, Drakh and Dilgar books £5 each. So the total to get totally up to date is £80. And thats before even buying any minis. 2nd ed will change all that, and they'll all become obsolete. Once 2nd ed is released the investment will only ever be, 2nd ed.

I'd recommend waiting for 2nd ed, but if you can't wait then just get the revised set. Play with just that until 2nd ed comes out, but be warned that most rules advice given out on these forums is for up-to-date Armageddon :)

Just a thought... Iron crown did an "exchange" program, for every D20 book you sent in they gave you $5 off their HARP roleplaying books, which, when you consider how many people had defunct DnD 3.0 books was pretty cool. Maybe mongoose could give you a fiver off 2nd ed if you return 1st ed stuff? they then just send stuff for recycling, sure they would take a small hit on profits, but it would look good!

Sounds like a good idea :) but is MGP big enough to be able to do it?

yes, but it's still 4 months (minimum) before 2nd ed arrives, and people do want to play the game now, not then, so to speak.
