Sigh. Sorry for being so cynical.

More like shortdighted, the box by the cover photo clearly states they are not for sale, no doubt they'll be used as prizes, etc as they are here. As it says "You'll have to win it"

Given the success of books like Wild Talents, Delta Green: Eyes Only and many other alternate sales processes being used in the RPG market today, I am not sure I am the one being short sighted.

Still, despite my slight annoyance of the approach taken, I love Slaine enough to not be too taken back by it. I will still buy the RPG after all. :)

this prize book will be great to have but like my spanish edition of the first edition its extra to the stuff needed to play the best celtic roleplaying game in the known world 8)

I agree its extra. It just surprises me that Mongoose makes that judgement call for its customers, rather than letting them make it with their wallets.

My copy of Slaine RQ arrived today. First thing I noticed was the line about how your character's class will define their abilities and skills :)

:) Don't worry, it wasn't too glaring though I did notice the use of the "Blood of Heroes feat" later on to.

Got my copy today. Although I didn't have time to read it much that reference to character class got noticed here too...

Another point to consider in later supplements is the artwork. As I said in Conan forums, I don't mind B/W art at all. Actually I prefer it over color since in games it saves my money quite a bit. But there is this problem when using originally color images in B/W. They get sort of smothered and hard to comprehend (for the lack of better word).

Otherwise I have been very impressed of the book so far...

I must admit that I am a bit confused by the artwork choice, despite the fact that Clint Langley is the new hotness of Slaine.

To be honest, with a black and white book Fabry, McMahon and the other early artists would have been better choices on many occasions.

I also find it odd that all the artwork comes from Books of Invasion which is after the time when most of the setting is set i.e. pre-Horned God. This makes the art often forced to match the text, and often there is no match at all.

In the d20 version, the art choices were much more appropriate to the text.

That's true but on the other hand things have stayed quite constant and despite who makes the pictures they are suppose to represent the same thing. For example Fomorians and dwarves are supposed to look similar despite the timeline so I didn't quite follow what you meaned, Hal.

Well the comics make it pretty clear what picture goes with which concept. Langley does draw many things and they have been used appropriately. However, there are some odd matches, mostly as Books of Invasion covers only a part of the Slaine saga.

In regard the timeline, the maps, the state of Tir Nan Og, the description of the Tribe etc is all set pre-Horned God. This was originally a conscious choice by Ian Sturrock as the d20 campaign was set in the same time frame.

The new book incorporates this decision for the most part. There are some up to date references in terms of the bestiary and items but for the most part it is all unchanged. However, all of the Clint Langley's artwork is all post-Horned God. For example the 4 Tribes have all but disappeared as distinct entities when they moved to Ireland. IIRC the picture chosen for the Tribe of Shadows seemed odd, as Langley never had to draw a member of this tribe. The Drunes have all but been destroyed too.

Overall, this makes the corresponding artwork to some of the pre-Horned God ideas odd on occassion, where there is often very appropriate Slaine (but not Langley) artwork available. Its not fatal to the product, I just wish more care was taken to match the best comic art from the series with the concepts in what is a comic book licenced RPG.

The tribes are less distinct and the Drunes are all but destroyed.

But those Formorians and Dwarves are the same as they have always been.

Ah, OK. I think I got it now. I have missed quite a lot of Slaine comics since noone imports 2000AD/Rebellion stuff to here directly. It's a shame, really. Still my FLGS carries Books of Invasion series so I am not totally out of the loop.

When/if I get a campaign going I will set my campaign to pre Horned God period.

Try looking for other Slain comci or graphic novels on Amazon.com and Ebay. They are sure to have them.

It would be particuly easy to find the last teo repreints that cover Slaine from the start and then going to end of Time-Killer.

I'm keeping a eye out for the next to follow on from that.

Does the Time Killer has all the first progs of Slaine in there or just some of them? I think that I have some of those, even part of the story where they had the las-guns.
