RQ DriveThruRPG sale - do we really have only 2 weeks left?

DigitalMage

Mongoose
A while back I saw that the prices for the RQ and RQII PDFs on DriveThruRPG.com had been reduced to aan average $9.99 each with a couple of bundles of RQII as well.

I assumed this was a permanent reduction in light of the RQ licence coming to an end. And I hoped to buy a few PDFs a month until the PDFs must be inevitably pulled (assuming they will be pulled).

However I just realised that The Drunken Goblin's Sales Page indicates that the RQII sale is only on 13 days (I assume the same goes for RQI).

So basically, bearing in mind it would cost me $257.72 to get all the PDFs I wanted (basically all the ones I am missing for both RQ and RQII), can Mongoose confirm that the prices will go up again to their original values in two weeks?

I figured I could spread that $257.72 over 5 or 6 months or so, averaging $40 to $50 a month, but now it looks like that won't be possible :(

The prices will be staying the same until the end of November!
Cool! Thanks for the quick reply, so about the 6 months I envisioned :) I assume end of November is when the PDFs are going to be made no longer available then, correct?

Well I just worked out the order I am going to purchase things, with the first couple of months being frontloaded a bit :)

MRQI Glorantha stuff first, I just bought:
The Clanking City
Jrustela
Ruins of Glorantha
Fronela
Blood of Orlanth
Dara Happa Stirs

July will be the MRQI Glorantha Races books
Dragonewts
Elfs
Dwarfs: Guide to the Mostali
Ducks: Guide to the Durulz
Trolls: A Guide to the Uz

August will be the MRQII Glorantha bundle:
Glorantha the Second Age
Cults of Glorantha
The Abiding Book
Races of Glorantha Volume 1
Pavis Rises

September will be the MRQII rules bundle plus the Compendium
RuneQuest II
Arms & Equipment
Monster Coliseum
Necromantic Arts
Empires
RuneQuest Compendium 1

October then starts the last of the RQI non-setting books
Arms & Equipment
RuneQuest Games Master's Handbook
RuneQuest Monsters II
RuneQuest Spellbook

November completes the lot
RuneQuest Legendary Heroes
RuneQuest Empires
Guilds, Factions & Cults
RuneQuest: Runic Powers
Rune of Chaos

I imagine I will be running with MRQI rather than II, but for just $34.96 I may as well buy the MRQII books, if nothing else it might help me convert some of the MRQII Glorantha stuff backwards, or if players really do want MRQII instead of MRQI I could run that (or Wayfarer).

Need to grab Deus Vult and Age of Treason (when out) and I'm pretty much done.

Unless someone can give me a good reason to buy the Wraith Recon stuff?

Wraith Recon is a pretty cool world if you're into semi-modern high-fantasy worlds (you're basically a SWAT team). It is very high-powered and mission-oriented, and I find it hard to fit campaigns into such gaming worlds.. but they're great for one-offs.

SpellCom is quite a nice book also.

Both are good if you're into D&D/non-Gloranth-style games. If you're not, they probably won't interest you.

Thanks, doesn't sound like my cup of tea then. I wasn't sold on the d20 version either. What about Deus Vult? That definitely worth getting?

And to push my luck anyone have anything good to say about clockwork & chivalry?

Deus Vult, in my opinion, doesn't get enough advertisement. This is a very cool and different kind of world that takes place in Medieval Europe. The characters are members of a secret, militant arm of the church that is dedicated to the elimination of magic and all other wiles of the Devil by any means necessary. They may do so through committing sins or destroying anything having any contact with magic. This creates drastic maral dilemnas that creates a fine line for characters between being a warrior for the Church or a menace. I have the book and it's truly awesome. Reminds me a lot of Assasin's Creed.

Sounds good. Makes me feel better about pickung it up.

Well I just took advantage of the Christmas in July sale and bought the PDFs I earmarked for October and November plus the MRQII Compendium, saving me $20.

I just have to buy the MRQII bundles now (which are still cheaper than the component PDFs with the Xmas discount).

Thanks Mongoose!

'Arawn76', I'd like to add my thumbs-up for Deus Vult. My RPG group has taken a break from our campaign - after playing it solidly for 10 months! We all really enjoyed it, and shall pick things up again around Christmas.

Just bought the RuneQuest II bundle for September leaving only the Glorantha Bundle for October to buy. :) I should have plenty of stuff to augment Legend with when it comes out.

So does this mean we'll be seeing some similar products specifically for Legen being released once the current books become exinct? My spending cash is rather restricted so i can't afford to pick them all up by the time they are gone, but i don't want to be limited to just the books i have now....runequest 2 core, coliseum, necro book, empres, arms and equipement. I'm hoping perhaps we'll get more in the way of races and magic equipment perhaps even more in the spells department?

Are there any other games that handle combat similarish to rq2? I'd prefer non class/level based systems that also have armor reducing damage as opposed to making it harder to "hit" someone......I"m trying to find a good review of the elric of melnibone as i recall stormbringer 1st edition i think it was, perhaps 2nd. But it sounds like that is class/lvl based?

At risk of mentioning non-Mongoose, all the BRP* derivatives follow this sort of approach, afaik.** OpenQuest is a simpler version of MRQ, based on the original MRQ SRD, and is easy to pick up and use; it just misses the hit locations, really.

There may still be information on the mrqwiki.

* Basic Role Playing
** Mainly because they were, in turn, based in the original RQ!

In addition, it's possible to mix-and-match material from these game systems to suit your personal taste - although this does take a bit of work on the GM's part. For example, I've been known to drop a few minor Lovecraftian horrors from Call of Cthulhu into my MRQ game on occasion.

Don't know enough about the other ones to know which i should pick up....I'm assuming they all use the same CORE system? its just fluff and perhaps differing spell systems? I'm not sure i really want to deal with the sorcery as it stands, i prefer players to have to pick from set spells instead of essentially making up their own. Also like to have an idea how things are priced and a general guideline on effectivness of magical items as opposed to just making up random magic items as seems to be the case for runequest.

can anyone give me some general info on each of the different "settings" they have? i think i can afford to buy one more till next month. Just theme wise i'd think the elric of melinbone.

And yes i think i'll be mixing and matching stuff so players have more options and hopefully one of the other settings has more in the way of set magic items/creation and or spells....hopefully :)

Spellcom (for the Wraith Recon setting) has a lot of very interesting mods or additions to the Core magic systems. If you are looking for magic items, this is probably the best book as it has a chapter devoted to magic items and has several dozen of them as examples. The detailed creation rules are in a separate chapter. The book also has rules for Concert Casting, which is multiple magicians combining their powers.

Age of Treason is an interesting setting. It tweaks and blends the magic systems to create a different feel from the core rules. It also has a number of other modifications to the core rules, such as a Social Status characteristic, new or tweaked skills, interesting religions which are not necessarily "cult" based, enchantments, combat styles and shield use, and more. There is lots to borrow from this book.
