I grew up with Runequest, and swedish RPG's inspired off it, whereas D&D was always sort of a side game for us, untill high school (then we started playing everything we could find)

As far as bringing in D20 players, I dont relaly believe in that.
D&D mostly has the same role as warhammer 40K in that sort of thing. It creates D&D players.

You have 2 groups.
Group 1 are people who will play anything. They would have eventually played RQ or another game, regardless of D&D.

Group 2 are D&D players. They have spend 200+ dollars on "the one true system", and are not going to go outside that fold. Heck, some of them dont even buy non-WOTC D&D books.

And there's group 1.5, who would play other games but have difficulty persuading the Group 2 people they play with to do so, so end up playing only d20...

thats true too. I've never understood the "one true system" thing. Its not purely a D&D thing either, thats just where I've personally seen it the most. You find it with White wolf'ers, GURPSees and people thats memorized everything in Rolemaster 15 years ago.

To the guys I play with, its all about breaking open a book, going "lets try this out", rolling some dice, and killing shit :)

We dont get together enough, since we're all really flaky, but when we do, its good times. I love my group

I have been playing RPGs since 1983. I started with AD&D (1st and 2nd editions). I then moved onto RQ3. Our group played that for years and we heavily modified the rules (especially damage modifier for STR) to make it not MaimQuest. We then moved on to GURPS (3rd edition) and played that for years. I have been playing d20 Dungeons & Dragons (3.0 and 3.5 versions) for the last several years. These were the heavily played systems. I dabbled in Storyteller (pre-NWOD), Traveller (old school version), Gamma World, Star Frontiers, Justifiers, Shadowrun, D6 Star Wars, D6 Fantasy, D20 Star Wars, FUDGE, and a slew of other systems I can't remember off the top of my head.

I would say I have a box checked in AD&D, RQ3, 3rd ed. GURPS, and D20 Dungeons and Dragons.

I started in 1982 with RQ2. Since then, I've played the usual suspects, AD&D, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, Space 1889, Tunnels and Trolls, Car Wars, Traveller, Aftermath, Toon, Call of Cthulhu, Stormbringer, Elric, Hawkmoon, Ringworld, Other Suns, MERP, Paranoia, HeroWars, HeroQuest and others that I can't remember.

None of those games grabbed me in the same way that RQ did and none of the worlds grabbed me in the way that Glorantha did. Even the Eternal Champion games, which are D100 based, didn't seem right, perhaps because they were like RQ but different, and I'm a huge fan of Moorcock's books. Ringworld was pretty good, systemwise, but it was based on RQ3, or as near as RQ3 as makes no difference, but had skill trees that you needed a computer to understand and a world that was far too big to be playable.

All the other systems seemed to be missing something and none of them compared well to RQ in its various forms.

So, with the exception of a couple of Hero Wars/HeroQuest campaigns, I've only played RQ for 15 years or so.

So, I for one am very pleased to see a new version of RQ with new game settings. For all its faults, it's better to have a current version of RQ than not have one.

You could have added a box "Both".

The question was which system have you played most before MRQ. d20 or d100?

SGL.
I came essentially from an AD&D background (it dates back to the beginning of the 80s) and though I knew Runequest from name and played Cthulhu, I came incidentally to Glorantha through the Dragon Pass boardgame.

So does that mean the OGL Runequest isn't bringing in the D&D d20 players? Or that this board is just full of us RQ grognards?

Probably the latter. I think that when MRQ was announced, it was mostly RQ fans and Mongoose fans who first started chatting in the RQ forum. I believe that MRQ has some d20 converts, but that most of them just aren't hitting the Mongoose forum. The % of d20 coverts on the forum will probably increase over time, but it is still to early for thier numbers to have grown enough to match up with the long time RQ fans.

Mostly BRP background since I discovered StormBringer's 1st french edition in 1987. However, I have always been interested in all forms of game systems. Apart from BRP-based games, I like the ideas behind Fading Suns, Pendragon, Exalted and ShadowRun 4 systems.
