Re: Play Testing Shadows

Hi All,

Played a play test game with Grunvald today Shadows vs Mimbos to try out some of the ideas in P+P. Grunvald is writing up a review which should be available later today.

A couple of questions arose in the game?

1. Do shadow Scouts get a plus +1 when using the SA roll to reduce stealth? We played they don't but having read the rules in the fleet book the language is slighly ambiguious to say the least!

"Superior Technology: The technical advances of the younger races pose few problems for the shadows. They gain a +1 bonus to all rolls they make to circumvent any enemy ship's stealth"

In my mind a SA to reduce stealth is a roll to circumvent it!

2. When my shadow scout shoots at a Nial in base contact with it, do I have to roll to beat it's stealth? I think you don't but Grunvald is convinced you do?

Not wanting to spoil Grunvald's thunder but in today's game I took

Shadow Ship Young
Shadow Stalker x 2
Scouts x 3
3 patrol points of Fighters

Grunvald took

Shaarkan x 1
Morshin x 1
Leshath x 2
Tigara x 2
Ashinta x 2

Couple of observations

1. Fix to Shadow Stalkers was pretty good. The extra AD and Strealth 4+ couple with their existing stats made them killers in this game. I think it also helped that for the first time I took 2 stalkers and squadroned them together. 8AD TD, B, Precise is pretty scary!

Admittedly Grunvald fleet selection only included one ship with a beam, everything else had mini beam, so he never managed to pin any of my ships (which is a major weakness of the stalker).... even so the +1AD and Stealth in my view have definitely made the Stalker worthwhile taking, as long as you are able to take more than 1 of the ships.

2. Even with the Shield trait being usable in dogfights and against antifighter, the Shadow fighters still lacked something.

I suggest giving the Shadow Ships (Ancient and Young) a fleet carrier trait. At least that way in the larger games the fighters will get a dogfight +1 bonus and a recovery roll. I know it doesn't helpm in the lower PL games but it should make a bit of a difference in the larger.

morshin has a beam too.
in answer to your questions:

1: no you dont get +1 to scout ability to reduce stealth. the scout roll is not to circumvent stealth its to help you circumvent it. if you do pass however you then get +2 against that ship.

2: yes you have to roll to beat stealth against the fighters for standard attacks (ie not AF trait). the ignoring stealth is a fighter specific thing when they are attacking an enemy ship, not vice versa.

alot of people dont remember the morshin has a beam now, they just pick it as the minbari carrier and almost run it like the 1e one.
