Rangers of Thandara

REH calls the soldiers of Thandara "Rangers".

Have these soldiers been developed in any supplement? Or are they simply borderers?

They are borderers, and they are discussed in more detail (including some prestige classes) in Across the Thunder River.

During the playtest, the discussion on what to name the class now known as "borderer" was long, and one of the options was Ranger because that is what REH called them.

Well, I asked for "Across Thunder River" for my birthday, so I hope to get that one soon.

I suppose calling them Rangers was out no matter how good the argument because of the D&D class. Which is too bad, since I don't really care for "borderer." It implies a function for which they don't always serve, especially since some of them never defend a border, but range inside a country or specific area.

Yes, I recall the discussion. I was one of the proponents of "Ranger", but many thought it was too AD&D-ish a name :) (despite the Howardian reference)

What were some of the other ideas for the class's name?

For those reading this, do you think the class should be called something else?

The first draft of the playtest chapter on characters called them "Foresters." In the fourth draft, the class was called "Frontiersman." The class was called "Borderer" at the fifth draft.

IIRC, the debate centered around Forester, Frontiersman, Borderer, and Ranger. I don't remember any of the other suggestions. Unlike rabindranath72, I don't even remember which side of the argument I was on! (in hindsight, I wish I had saved some of those discussions for posterity).

I recall my "side" since I thought that Ranger was so obvious a choice :D.

I should have all the 6-months posts stored somewhere... :?

I never like the name Borderer myself. I would go with Frontiersman or Ranger, should I choose. Well, in effect when I used C&C to play Conan, I simply used the Ranger class "as-is".
