Radar

Radar seems to be a relatively complex rule that crosses several sections, so I thought it'd be worth its own thread.

First, the Radar section in Advanced Rules pretty much just states the following:
Roll to Detect a ship within 30".
At Night or in Bad Weather, Detected ships are automatically Spotted when they move within 20" of the detecting ship.
If Spotted in this way at Night, the -1 penalty to hit for being Night is not applicable.

There's a bunch of other stuff, but that has more to do with conditions of Detecting ships and so on.

We have spotted issues with the following rules:

1. Night Battles section in Advanced Rules

"In addition, ships more than 20” away may not be attacked at all at night (though radar can allow attacks as described on page XX). Those at closer ranges must be Spotted before they can be attacked."

There are no provisions in the Radar rules to allow attacks at greater than 20".

2. Create Smoke! Special Action

"No attacks that draw a line through these counters may be made at all (though see Radar rules on page XX)."

There are no provisions in the Radar rules to allow attacks through smoke.

3. There are a number of refits that mention the adding of Advanced Radar to ships that already have Radar. Does this mean they will have both the Radar and Advanced Radar traits? This could have implications for trait loss e.g. due to crippling.

4. With the exception of the removal of the -1 to hit penalty at night, there are no other benefits to radar fire control. Is this intentional?

The descriptive text does say "the use of radar quickly spread to the sea where it was used to locate enemy ships at great ranges and direct the fire of turret guns, enhancing their accuracy" but the rules do not reflect this at all.

Just to add that the Bad Weather rules do not mention Radar.

But ships in bad weather can be spotted 25" inches away (ships 15" - 25" must be spotted). So ships can be spotted by the naked eye at 20-25" but not by radar.

With regards to bad weather and night, it needs to be stated somewhere which set of spotting rules apply when it is a dark and stormy night.

We have some hold outs here from previous mechanics - will be clearing the loose ends up in the next revision (which will not be long in coming now!).
