Question about Stunners

I like the idea of Ion weapons being heavy weapons requiring a vehicle mount or tripod rather than a rifle. Also the TL15 Ion gun as presented if far too inexpensive for a high tech weapon that can, and is apparently designed specifically to, defeat Battle Dress.

Ion weapons are presented in High Guard but are strictly turret or bay weapons in that tome. If you buy the upcoming Glorious Empire book, you will see the concept of ion missiles introduced. This is merely an exploration of miniaturizing the technology and making it available to smaller weapons. I think perhaps introducing it as a heavy weapon might make it more palatable than a rifle. Just a thought. My sense of it is that fans of the game like new guns and you can always house rule them out of your game if they don't make a good fit.

Ion weapons as presented in HG have no place in the OTU. That's not to say you couldn't have electromagnetic pulse missile warheads

Ions are charged particles. If you are firing a stream of charged particles the weapon is a particle accelerator - neutral particles for use in space (you accelerate them as charged particles and then neutralise the beam as it leaves the weapon) or charged particles for use in an atmosphere (basically a lightening gun, you could even fire a laser pilot beam to form the channel for the particles).

As to tachyon weapons... no, just no.

Back to the topic of an energy weapon stunner - I would frantically wave hands and invoke magnetic fields, since we know strong magnetic fields can indeed cause your brain to stop working properly. A directed short range magnetic effect, there you go.

You could simplify it by transmitting the power through WiFi from the battery in the gun to the fired dart, so range would depend on power transmitted and range of dart.

As regards extra heavy melee weapons, that's what powered battle dress is for.

Just out of curiosity, how do you deal with stunners against creatures? They don’t have stats, just hit points. The question arose yesterday, I allowed one of my player to use its stunner against a fierce creature with 29 hps and a bad attitude. I said to myself: “no reason this shouldn’t work on animals” but how determining stats? A base would be one third for END, STR and DEX and then an adjustment: more END for tougher predator creature, less for herbivores. On the top of my hat I decided that the creature had a high END, 15 or so. How would you do it?

That sounds like a good approach. You might consider a high effective END a Trait. You could also have reduced vulnerability/susceptibility to electrical damage as Traits.
