Project update: Survey and Exploration Group

Cosmic Mongoose
A while back I started working on an idea for a dedicated long duration exploration and survey group..a combined collection of several ships, and source material for how the group would fit int the larger scheme of a setting. It started out as working on a few designs for practice using blender....and took off from there. So here is a blurb, and a family photo of the groups before it heads out on it's Next assignment. To Boldly go...oh wait that motto is already taken.

the 227th Perimeter survey group is a mobile research and survey task force operated by the Scout Services. It's primary mission is a deliberate and detailed survey of frontier regions which have not been fully cataloged due to political difficulties, close proximity to belligerent states, or high frequency of criminal;/hostile activities.

Due to it's assignment the 227 Has been assigned a larger number of armed independent operations corvettes than typical for a Survey group. most of it's Corvettes are armed armored, and equipped with longer range Jump drives than the standard Insystem operations vessel.

The Command tender, Duchess Rhea is named after a veteran of the Scout Services awarded Noble rank for service to the Imperium, and Bravery in the face of hostile fire. It serves as a mobile base of operations, lab ship, and service tender/transport for the group. It's multi role design does mean that it is not as well equipped as a similar sized specialize vessel, however it's flexibility is unmatched by standardized designs.

The Duchess Rhea also has the ability to assist non scout services vessels which might suffer, breakdown, damage, or other unexpected difficulties within her operational area, and with the assistance of the Attached SAR vessel it tasked with Assisting any civil, or commercial vessel in distress within it's area, in addition to its normal duties.

During normal operations the Duchess will remain in the same system as her Insystem craft, along with the Heavy Escort Stalwart, to protect the lightly armed and armored Insystem craft. The Escort corvettes will patrol regions nearby for possible hostile activity, and provide additional escort for other Survey corvettes if needed.

The Support detachment usually accompanies the Duchess, and Stalwart however they may be deployed to other systems if the need arrives, usually traveling with an escort corvette for additional protection. The tankers often move between various resupply caches, and set up emergency fuel caches in several systems in case the Group needs to evacuate a system rapidly, or comes under heavy attack.

This system of pre positioned caches, and maintaining a constant supply of fuel at all times allows the group to maneuver quickly, to evade hostile attack, or respond to emergencies that may require them to temporarily suspend survey operations. Usually to offer assistance to civilian populations near it's primary operations area.

The typical mission for the Duchess Rhea and the 227 is a complete planetary survey of each world in a designated system. Including major planets, planetoids, and any large asteroid/comet clusters discovered by details astronomical observations of the region.

These surveys consist of geological surveys, mineralogical surveys, and biological testing, and cataloging of notable species discovered during initial surveys.

In addition detailed navigational charts, hazard surveys, and solar activity profiles are compiled by orbiting craft. these surveys and charts are focused on providing accurate information for jump calculations, and safe transit of the system for commercial and private vessels.

In the event of a discovery of significance, the survey group is required to notify the Scout Services immediately and secure the site for detailed study by more specialized groups. this includes establishing a temporary exclusion zone and diverting any unauthorized vessels form the excluded areas until the Scout Services, and Imperial agencies clear the zone for open access, or establish a permanent presence to enforce access restrictions.

Notes:
I'd like to see if people are interested. This would include background, game suggestions, NPCs, story/plot hooks. Ship illustrations and game statistics, as well as deckplans, maps, and other visual aides. It would be par of the Scouts in a Traveller setting funded by sector/subsector governments, and corporations to carry out missions to improve planetary database, support commerce, locate valuable minerals, and carry out log term exploration cruises.

I am very interested in suggestions, and ideas, as well as any feedback that might come my way...

Currently ships and basic layout completed, working on detailed deck plans, sample modules for the ships. Adventure seeds, and NPCs....background/Sample adventure largely planned out...but waiting to finalize details based on feedback.

I would have thought cheap drones, which would identify areas that require a more thorough survey.
Those are carried by scouts, the support tender, and the corvettes...I had to compress several dozen pages of notes and not everything made it in to the sample text.

I am planning to add multiple types of drones and automated craft at a later point. I am also working on charts for the Ref to determine, if the drone survived, if it discovered anything, what it discovered, and what obstacles there are involved in recover the drone/data.
