Primal Land

Hi.

Has any one read or used ideas from Brian Lumleys Primal Land books ? They seem to involve Conan like characters and Cthulhoid Horrors too and might be useful in your games.

I've not read his Primal Land books but I looked for it at Borders and sadly all they had by Lumley was a single Necroscope book. :?

I know it is off topic, but personally I liked the Necroscope series more anyway. :)

I loved it....until book 3. Sorry, I loved the plain, old fashioned vampire hunting/espionage/psychic powers adventures way more than the transdimensional superheroics in magical vampire land. If he had just kept it more grounded....eh....

The Primal Land is great. Though be warned: It's written with a more Clark Ashton Smith flair than Lovecraft or Howard. Situations and events are often meant to be satirical or tongue-in-cheek, rather outright serious.

As a matter of fact, the first story in the Primal Land sequence is a send-up of Conan. In this case we get to see how a Conan-character would appear to civilized folk -- a drunk nasty, violent, narcissist.

Given that though, the stories are entertaining, evocative and good inspiration for adventures. Definitely some good S&S.

There are also Lumley's Dreamlands novels, which is pure S&S in Lovecraft's Dreamlands. Great stuff as well.
