Pre-Order status should come FIRST ...Mongoose Pub!!!

Bygoneyrs

Mongoose
Hello everyone,

I am sorry but I have to complain!!! When Mongoose Pub started taking Pre-Orders (thus getting the money in their bank account before the book was out) they should have filled those orders FIRST!!! I Pre-Ordered all the books up at the time; MGP Core, SM, 760, HG, MERC, T&G. Now I have my Core rule book , but am still awaiting on SM. What gall it would seem to me to take a customers money early for a book not yet out, and then instead of filling the most of the Pre-Orders first(folks like that are always the die-hard Old Guard players), they send out to stores. Damn if I know they were going to do that I would have waited and gone to a local gaming store instead. I pre-order because I find it easier to just mail-order stuff than take the drive to the gaming store.

What I would like is to hear PUBLICALLY on this BOARD from Mongoose what their future policy is going to be for filling Pre-Orders. Do we get 1st printings or what? I do believe that I and everyone else here has the right to know your company position and policy on this subject. For myself if you plan on filling Pre-Orders out of the 1st run printing then I will continue to pre-order from you!

So speaking as a 32+ year gamer/player of RPGs and with a Game Friendly wallet with cash to spare on my hobby, what do you have to say Mongoose Pub?

A concerned gamer/customer

This is why I never pre-order anything. I have a long standing policy of waiting until the book actually is out and I KNOW it is out. Then I buy it.

The policy is going to be what it always has been - we much prefer you to buy from your local games store. If you do not have such a store nearby, you are more than welcome to avail yourself of our mail order service.

99% of our books see the pre-orders go off at the same time as distributors recieve them. In this _one_ instance, that was not possible. There simply were not enough books to go round (as it stands, I personally have yet to see a Spinward Marches myself, and I own the company!).

...and if you had a pound for every time you've had to explain this on the board lately, you could own another company :)

Seriously, I get the impression that Mognoose Traveller has been a bigger sales success than anyone could have anticipated.

Why shouldn't it have been? They should have known many of the old guard would buy it and once word of mouth on the play test went out I know many non-Traveller folks who were also interested.

It took me about three weeks of constant badgering to get my store to finally locate me a copy of the MGT core book.

I had SW a week after it came out and apparently before some of the pre-orders have arrived.

All it takes is the following words:

"If you want my money..."

Allen

So when will the pre-orders be filled? I'm a little disappointed to say the least. :(

My nearest FLGS is 50 miles away, north or south. I work a 12 hour day (not including the two hours travel) and don't have the option of just dropping in. Mail order is the only way for me to get games or to organise a special trip into Edinburgh (public transport is a bus every 3 hours for a 2 hour journey or brave the impossibility of trying to park/drive in the centre of Edinburgh). I like to support them but just don't have the time.

If I'd known that there was going to be an issue I'd have ordered from Leisure Games or Amazon.

Still, at least I know it'll get here eventually. :D

Well I have my reply and I thank you for that, and am happy to know and understand your policy Mongoose. I will be willing to Pre_order more books in the future and except your statement and etc!

Yes using your local game store is a good idea, BUT ONLY IF ANY OF THE JERKS WOULD CARRY ANYTHING OTHER THAN GAMES WORKSHOP!

Yup, my Local Gaming Store is now called Amazon.com because the actual LGS is filled with a bunch of useless P.O.S.'s...and Amazon has been pretty useless lately dealing with anything across the pond.

Try to get to burbank. The Last Grenadier was always a very good shop, and not overrun with just WH crap. And some very interesting people used to hang out there, Jerry Puornelle for one.

I hate to say it but its the Last Grenadier Burbank that I have lost all faith in.
If you are into miniatures wargaming, you will get some help, but they really don't care about the roleplaying part of the store. I frequented the Northridge store for over 20 years and was never let down...then they closed it.
Hell I went in to see if they had any copies of the Traveller main book and the response was "uhh that old game? I didn't know they still sold it." They don't participate in free rpg day, their gaming book section is a complete mess. The last time I went in there the two guys behind the counter were too busy arguing about an MMO they were completely entranced with to give two shits about anything else in the store. The biggest problem is there is no real gaming market here in LA (San Fernando and Santa Clarita valley in particular)...trading card games finalized that death.
No...Amazon.com is a good local gaming store.

Not all FLGS are created equal, Matt. Some of us don't buy local because out options are limited by not so local stores or stores that plain stink.

It'd be nice is the orders were first come, no matter if it's from a store or end user.

Dyrewulf that just plain sucks. They used to be a great place to hang out, but that was about 12 years ago.

There used to be a place in eagle Rock named Something Unusual that was very good for minis and RPG. Unfortunetly, they where planning on closing when I left, so I doubt they are still open.

There used to be a lot of RPG play in LA.

Yup it sure does. I hung out at the northridge one for many years and always had a great time...the owner closed down everything cept for his prized burbank store...I get so frustrated even talking about that store. I wish I had money to open and run my own store.

Personally I'd rather support the publishers, not the game store. If the game store disappears, the publishers will still be there selling their stuff by mail order or PDF download (and making more money per sale too). If the publisher disappears... well, the stuff that I want to buy won't be available anymore from anywhere.

The Last Grenadier in Burbank is where I bought both my Core Rule Book and the Spinward Marches book. But to be fair, Dyrewolf is correct when he says the store today is a shadow of what I went to 7 years ago when I first moved to Burbank.

On a side note, Dyrewofl, I spoke to them and they have a copy of Spinward Marches set aside for me right now. If you still need it, let me know and I would be happy to work with you to get it. PM me.

Daniel

Thanks Daniel,
I have it on my cart with Amazon. I won't spend money at the grenadier any more. I once ordered something with Andrew, it took 4 months for him to get it...Rocky got involved and it still took a month. I finally ordered it online from the publisher, got it in 2 weeks, brought it in, showed them what I had been waiting for 4 months for and to please continue their efforts to get me a copy...after mentioning it only took 2 weeks to get a special edition copy...

For years I lived in Philadelphia, PA and use to go to the Complete Strategist in down town. It was awesome, and then they closed that store and the one in King of Prussia, PA took over. Now the old guy that was the manager there was cool and a Old Guard traveller player, but that was like12+ yrs since I have been there. Many of the local gaming stores all carry War Hammer stuff and seem to focus on that stuff. They only give lip service to RPG stuff. Oh they might get a few copies of the latest new release but then trying to get stuff in that they don't have is a royal pain. I started to use FRP games pub to order stuff, but felt going to such places like Hero Systems Games or Mongoose Pub itself would be better and does the publisher make the MOST money from those sails...with NO MIddle Men? Why the attitude about not wanting to do sales, is beyond me there! Sadly guys we RPGers are a dieing breed and our days are numbered in the long run!

Sounds good. I just thought I would help out a fellow Traveller.

I will tell him to put it back on the shelf.
