Ponderings on magic in Elric

Mage

Mongoose
I got a cool idea for a npc for my elric game, as I am going through the novels before the rpg is released.

I am aware of sorcery, but am curious about the more sinster magic, like pacts with demons, elementals, or worse.

There was another chaosium rpg of this, entitled stormbringer, or it could have been elric, can't remember. Anyhow, if anyone knew what the rules were like in that I'd have a rough ideaq of how it worked.

Just curious if you could bind an elementa to a sword using magic at the end ot he day though, and the price of making such deals with entities.

There were both. Stormbringer was the name of most releases. One release (around 4th ed.) was titled Elric!, and the final Chaosium Edition (5th ed.) was titled Stormbringer again.

First Edition and Elric! are available as PDF's from Drivethrough.

Stormbringer 1ed. sorcery was very powerful and completely unbalanced but had more the flavor of the books (where sorcery is very powerful and completely unbalanced). As I recall you could summon an Elemental or Demon, the better your skill the more powerful, and bargain with it, command it, or bind it. You absolutely could bind things to objects like swords if you wanted to. Demon Swords and Armor were very powerful.

Later editions toned down magic a bit and made it a bit more like traditional rpg magic systems, mostly in the interest of play balance I presume. In 1st ed. a competent Sorcerer is more powerful than a non sorcerer. Period. End of Story.

Awesome. Still though, there would be a price to pay for making deals, wouldn' there?

Yes, Your soul.

Which, curiously, is rather how magic works in the new book...

So either way your soul is gone, no matter how big the pact is: say slight assistance from a minor elemental or patronage of arioch has the same penalty?

So asking an earth elemental for a ham sandwich means your soul is gone, as is asking Arioch, asuming you get his help, giving you an army, has the same price?

No, not quite - but you're on the right lines. You'll see when the Elric books comes out.

A sardonically evil, yet coy laugh shakes the walls of reality

"Soon, soon..."

Then you go and find the scrolls that confuse the chaos gods when you die and end up in a nice comfy bijou circle of hell, laughing

Well, if I ever come across an elemental or demon in real life, I'll ask for something really cool, not a sanwhich.
