Planet Mongoose Preview: Gorn and Kzinti

No link, so it's not real.

Oh, wait, here it is http://blog.mongoosepublishing.co.uk/?p=134

They look so much nicer than the preview images suggested. I was ready to get all shirty about them looking like poo, but I can't.

Damn you Sandrine!

Gorn
I like the destroyer model - although both the designs just don't say big angry reptile to me and I like the ships to reflect their builders - even if that is not logical.....

Kzinti - hmm I could live with the dreadnought if I cut its spindly arms off and stuck a big flight bay either side and stenciled Battlestar..........on it ;).

Impressive painting as always :)

Outsanding, thanks for some Gorn Love there Mr Sprange.

Shame about the furballs though, you could have done two more gorn ships :P

The ships looks nice; but, well, I really don't like to be the one to say this to the author of the ACtA:SF rulebook, but in the Star Fleet Universe the naming convention is supposed to be Gorn singular/Gorns plural, and Kzinti singular/Kzintis plural.

(I'm not sure if the case with the Gorns is simply ADB's preferred naming convention or not, but if I'm not mistaken the Kzinti/Kzintis one is a legal issue; from what I recall, part of the agreement with the Niven estate which allows that empire to be in the setting requires ADB to treat the cat-ear no-tail sentient-female SFU Kzintis as a half-step apart from the Known Space Kzin.)

Given how important it is for ADB to keep within the guidelines set by the licence (which, in this case, does not just involve Paramount directly, but also the Niven estate) I would hope that the book itself has the appropriate naming convention, so as to make sure it sticks with the policy that ADB themselves follow in that regard.

Impressive models, as usual! At least the releases are being spaced out to make it easier on my poor credit card.

Axe Cop has a tyrannosaurus with guns for arms that can fly. Maybe Sandrine can do some "alternate" Gorn miniatures based on that?!

Welcome to the Gorn. These reptilians have ships characterised by being very ugly, very brutal, not particularly agile, but loaded with a devastating amount of firepower!

Gorns aren't ugly, YOU'RE ugly! [Runs off sobbing]

Nah, the gorn sculpts look lovely. Not as sexy as a flying tyrannosaurus with guns for arms, but then, what is?

Gorns aren't angry reptiles. Anger is such a warm-blooded emotion.

Gorns set about the task of killing their opponents; they are in no rush to do so, but will continue relentlessly until their task is done.

Gorns are not ugly, big, tough, scary, slow, lumbering, packing huge firepower on a massive hull with the turn mode of a bath tube.

Fearsome, mighty, relentless, these are the Gorn.

If you want UGLY go find the Tholians and the Hydrans, joint first place winners of the "creature so UGLY it can cause people to faint in shock at the ugliness of them" awards.

Sadly they are so slow and lumbering we have to wait months for them to arrive while the fast and fragile types have already arrived :(

Thats exactly my issue the ships are not ugly or brutal looking - they are quite delicate in apperance.

Oh and years ago I tried to convince our ST rpg GM to have a T-Rex race appear in in our games :) - they had really big ships.

Gorns don't consider themselves ugly, nor are they brutal (though their actions might be perceived that way).

I also wouldn't call the Gorn designs delicate - the durability intrinsic with a sphere-based hull design matches their ability to bowl over and through their opponents.

What? I ought to trap you in a web and leave you there for that :P

And Hydrans are lovely creatures:

Their ships might look rubbish in SFB, but they're still cool.
Both are slightly more realistic than space-cat-people too.

Speaking of which, their ships look like b-4 pencils with bits on. They're an improvment over the older ones for sure, but it's a shame the designers haven't been given the chance to redo them to something better.

(Any chance of doing that with the hydrans? their cruisers look like 2x4's with nacelles on... and the other ships don't look much either)

On the plus side, the Gorns look pretty sweet. So I'll probably grab some

Unless I'm still flat broke like I am now..

That pic above is one of the re-works that Taldren did for the Starfleet Command PC game; the Hydrans in the "regular" SFU look more like this.

(Much of the stuff that Taldren worked up for SFC does not feed back into ADB's version of things; something I myself learned when I first made the leap from one to the other a while back.)

^yup, knew all that. (Thanks though) Just used it instead because the SFB hydrans are ugly.

It's a shame ADB didn't use at least some of the things from SFC really, a lot of it came off looking better than the source IMO.

You should never feel guilty about blowing up Hyrdrans, Tholians, Wyn, Lyrans, or for that matter Romulans and Kzinti. They all deserve it.

Some just deserve it more

So blow up the Methane suckers to your hearts content safe in the knowledge that you are helping improve the universes "not ugly" factor as you do so

This list also displays my least liked fleets and any not mentioned above can be considered to be those I like more :D
