Photon Torpedos

From what I have seen the Federation Dreadnought is a bit of a beast now its lost lumbering - it does need support ships to make sure it can get its boresight in but 6 photos can spoil anyones day :)

Given that it can turn equally with the Feds BC's and the Klinks C-8, it is a nasty beast in battles where there are enough ships that it's point cost doesn't cause an initiative sink disparity. It potentially can kill or cripple a cruiser in a single firing phase.

It seems to me another use is to wade into the enemy formation, get within 2" of a hapless Klingon Cruiser, tractor that sucker and keep him from moving. Then several frigates/FFB/DW run right up his keister with photons and phasers. They should drop his shield or cripple him.

The DN doesn't even have to have the target in Fore arc...you can save the photons for later, or hit another target if one is in arc.

Next turn the DN moves off and tries it again...and leaves the crippled Klingon cruiser for the piranhas to finish off. :D

Indeed the fed DN is a scary monster.

I really like the plasma DN (or DNF). It's price point fits right into my fleet and the plasma torps are a really nice backup for the photons.

After you unleash the photons it's not exactly "safe" to get right up into it's face.

The Klingons last night couldn't even bother with the DN. It was just too big and well sheilded...they tried to decimate the destroyers and the CA's but by the time they started doing some damage their entire fleet was crippled, next turn it was destroyed.

...and yea, this is sort of off topic but the Klingons were beat by Photons. That's why I posted it here. Photons won the day, quite handily in fact.

You have to know WHY things work on a starship.

But with photon's of their own the Klingons could have given it a shot ;) Nothing to ruin dreadnoughts day like nasty critical or two. And photon's excel at giving nasty criticals to target ships :) Indeed the bigger the ship the better for photons! The more smaller ships enemy has the less impact photon's will have as a rule of thumb.

Actually in defense of the OP I find photons difficult to use.

My favorite race are the kitty cats but I almost always play the Feds because no one else wants to.

They are a iconic race faction and everyone else like to pound on them.

Also, with regards to empirical evidence, I roll consistently below average. Not at 1000 photon shots yet, but getting there. :D

So my strategy with Feds has been the highly accurate and wide arc phasers, power to shields, rinse and repeat. Throw in a smattering of Kaufman Retrograde and I usually manage to hold my own.

If I can line up someone in my forward arc, then yes by all means fire photons. I just do not rely on them.

I think Fed ships taken as a whole, factoring in terrain, scenarios (labs? ), can hold their own. Even with the initiative penalty (though not as bad as the poor Gorn) the ships are solid enough to take the hits and stay in the fight.

In a straight up wide open space fight, it is a bit more difficult but not impossible.
