pbp traveller game

Yaaa!

Just finished reading the last few pages.

Subzero001?

Did you intend to be a Imperial Duke ( SOC 15 ). They rule over multi sub-sector sized areas.

I was curious about that but didn't mention it. I mean damn, 15 is high :P
I do feel a little like my character will be slightly pointless what with his very high skills (compared to mine) :P
However, a duke isn't that bad a thing to have aboard. That and he also engineers good

Yeah, you have a fair point.

Yes, it's true, we have a forum!!

Traders of Gaths XII, look it, love it, play it

There i will make some topics involving map and other things.

Dez-1

Across the grand hall, the gaze of a well dressed man in his forties focuses on the growing crowd around the Baroness de Monterey. His smile never changes but his eyes betray a hint of concern, even desperation.
"Well, no use stalling any longer."

OOC: Mister Adrian Beshiir is in the house.

I'm still not a damn Baroness :P Sophia is the granddaughter of a baroness... maybe once the grandparents, mum and dad, and both her older brothers die she'll get it... but with anagathics and not being terribly corrupt people, who knows when that'll happen....

Sophia looks up at the new arrival. She smiles
"Hello there. and you are?"

"Mister Beshiir" lost his promising career with a noble family to rumor and allegation from within the very family he so faithfully served for eight years. With no hope of continuing in the professional financial field, Beshiir turned to 'confidence games' to maintain his life style. This looked like a good career choice till an organized crime group wanted to recruit him and take their cut of the profits. He fled off-world with his life savings and is looking for a safe place to hide and get further away from his home world. He describes himself as various things depending on what he thinks an employer seems to need, such as a Security Advisor, Financial Advisor, Forensic Accountant or Trouble Shooter. He prides himself on not depending on weapons to pull his heists.

When asked why he does not normally carry a weapon he has been known to say: "I believe that guns DO have their place in civil society; for health reason I try to keep my self out of those places, whenever I can."

What are you aiming to do aboard my friend?
We seem to have an awful lot of persuade and brokerage skills around the group :P

Everyone, look at the forum. Put your character sheets on and we will disuss when we play. We can play tomorrow

"It is my pleasure to make your acquaintance, My Lady. My name is Adrian Beshiir. I see from the small crowd forming that I am not the only one to hear the whispers of your pending departure.”

“As for my qualifications; I am a certified sensors operator and computer systems technician. In addition, I have some degree of experience in financial matters, if cargo truly is a going to be a concern aboard you ship.”

Beshiir smile at the others gravitating around the young noble woman and gives it his best ‘I-am-here-to-help-you’ smile.

"Sophia, Sophia de Monterey. It's my pleasure Mr Beshiir. And no you're not. We appear to have had quite a few inquiries recently." she says, smiling at the man
"However, I do appear to be quite outnumbered here. Let me introduce Cirocco Jones, who will hopefully be piloting our little vessel."

P.S everyone go post here http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=667751#667751

I was wondering if there is someplace I can get a general format of how a PBP game functions since this will be a first for me. is it usually daily? how are dice roles normally done? Etc..

Any info will be appreciated, Thx

Really isn't a general format, depends on the individual game.

The referee, will typically determine the pacing of the postings and any other questions such as using the hionor system and using real dice or designate an on-line number gererator which would simulate any required rolls and provide a confirmation email to the player and the referee.

The following is based on my experiences and is not to be considered a full treatment of the subject.
Most pbp Traveller games I have participated in share several common elements:
1. The group spends a week or so in real time sorting out PCs and a ship.
2. The group typically spends the first part of the game role playing their initial (to some) meeting and further role playing when deciding the details of the 'Job Offer' whatever it may be.
3. There is typically is run out to the first encounter (more role playing) and then the resolution of said first encounter (roll playing).
4. The party arrives at the main plot point and begins to: solve the mystery, foil the evil plot, kill the bad guys etc.

The pace of postings is very high in the beginning and then the group settles into a slower yet more maintainable (for me) rhythm.

I hoped I provide some useful information in my ramblings.

ROLE PLAY vs ROLL PLAY
With PbP games there is typically more role playing and less rolling. There are times GM may want to roll for the players. Example: Instead of the GM asking all the players to roll a recon roll, or whatever is needed, and then having to wait for each player to respond before activity can continue, the GM rolls for all the players characters.

WHEN YOU CAN'T WALK, YOU CRAWL. WHEN YOU CAN'T CRAWL, YOU GET CARRIED.
While it is nice to have everyone involved in a game, activity should not depend on all hands posting. The person (which can vary from week to week #1) with less time to monitor and post in the game should never become a danger to the games continuation nor should they be left behind. People may be willing to let things crawl to give someone who is busy a chance to post but at some point the group and GM should "carry" the the non posters character until the PLAYER is declared "dead" or is capable of participating again.

#1 One week a player might be on vacation, another week a different player is real busy at work, some other time you haven't heard from a player in a while and find out that nearby construction took out their internet connection...

Some people will need patience. Running the game at a pace that half the people can not keep up with will lose players.

Having a game that is at a standstill will also lose players. Start the game with the understanding that players will allow the GM to make some decisions for the players to keep things moving.

Sorry, I can't tell you how to keep the proper balance. Each gaming group is different. It's best to get an idea of how often each participant thinks they will be able to participate. People will generally excuse themselves before the game starts if they think the majority of people will be posting faster or slower than they would like.

THINK AHEAD
The GM needs to think ahead when they write. What bits of information do the characters need to respond to the situation?

EXAMPLE: Don't just say "The door is locked".

I know some GMs that like to leave things out and see if PLAYERS will think of it for their character but things will go slow in a PbP if the players have to ask 20 questions every step they take. "Is there a guard nearby?" "Is there an alarm system?" "How sturdy is the door?" "Is it a mechanical lock?" "Electronic lock. Is it a keypad, swipe card, biometric?"

DICE ROLLING
I typically play on sites designed for PbP and they have dice rollers built in. For PbP on other sites, GM's use the honor system or require the use of a dice rolling web site that sends the results to the GM.

AlternityRPG.net runs a lot of PbPs. You can go browse those forums if you want an idea of how to run a PbP. Many simply die out from lack of posting, but a more usual pace is 1-2 posts per week. Most people will not be able to keep up and quickly lose interest at even 1 post per day, but it does vary.
