Particle Beams

Particle beams are listed as a TL8 weapon, which seems low. A triple turret is a TL9 item. Particle beams are quite powerful and probably at least as technologically sophisticated as a triple turret. They should have a higher TL associated to them to keep them in scale with other weaponry.
 
Either tech 9 or tech 10.

Tech 9 because it's been around for a bit but they only just invented a turret big enough to take it

Tech 10 because they invented the triple turret and someone said, hey with a turret they big maybe would could make a particle beam a bit smaller and get it to fit.
 
Well, we don't know when the Barbette (i.e. a 'fat' turret) gets introduced. So early PB may require a single barbette instead of eventually getting down to being two-per-turret.

Not to overly complicate things, but a PA, with it's radiation damage, seems like a purely military weapon to me. And navies and such would most likely be loathe to let any Zad, Dorn, or Harry run around the galaxy with them if they could somehow make it a little harder (like say you need a warrant or something from a planet or even pay a fee to the Imperium for authorization to have one) for ordinary people to have heavy weapons like this.

So maybe it would be the proper place to introduce the heavy laser, with close to the power (consumption and damage) of a PA, but none of the radiation damage. It would also allow you to scale the PA properly TL wise, and have the heavy laser introduced one TL after beam/pulse. Then you could take the PA out of the CRB since it's really a purely offensive weapon. A heavy laser is, too, but it's really more of a big brother to the other lasers. I dunno if you'd wanna split it into heavy pulse, and heavy beam, or just keep it as a heavy laser period.
 
I do like the idea that they start out as Barbette weapons and only a Tech Level later (or two) they can fit one into a Turret (the new shiny triple turret).
 
Exactly why do turrets with different configurations need higher tech levels?

Can't be because the standard weapons systems need less space.

I think it's an artificial method of letting players ramp up on the TL chart with equipment. however there is some precedent historically with turret technology in wet navies. As they got more experience they were able to build bigger, better turrets.

And, for the most part, I think it's a non-issue. What player runs around in a ship that has a TL below 9/10?
