Painting Star trek Miniatures

So how about a consensus on the base colour for Federation ships? I've always leaned towards light grey rather than white. What do the rest of you think?

Consensus on the colour of Federation hulls ? Opened a right can of worms there, mate :)

To me the TOS originals look off-white, the remastered ones look light grey (and the TAS ones look light grey/blue). Take yer pick, basically. Light Ghost Grey seems to be a popular choice among modellers. I'll be doing the SL 2500 ships in Foundry Arctic Grey (very pale grey), most likely over the dark shade of the same paint if it's any help.

I am not sure what color the ships were in the motion picture.
This might help answer the question. :D

The main colour seems to be grey, though it is difficult to be sure what colour the raised panels are. (The blue lighting from V'ger doesn't help judging this...) They appear darker, possibly slightly green, which would be consistent with the colour scheme given with the plastic kit of that ship.

Pale grey works well because some of the screen shots I've seen show illuminated panels on the saucer. If the base colour is pale grey then these can be painted bright white or fluorescent yellow and will show up nicely. (The same goes for windows if you have the patience!) And don't forget the red go-fast stripes.

This is a useful source of Star Trek material:

In particular, the Starship Gallery shows various pictures of various ships from various sources.

Nice site.

Anyway. The "Official" colour is what you are happy with, the Federation has a number of fleets and detached squadrons on its borders. The home fleet is gleaming blue/white because it shows up better for the Tri-D images, the Klingon border fleets are grey, the Kzinti facing squadrons could be more dirty white, the Romulan ones could be more blue etc.

Heck if you want to paint them blue/white with add slogans on the saucer and engineering hull go ahead.

"Today sports fans we have an exciting match for you, a small mixed battle group of our own heroes against those vile klingon raiders. The raiders are in the usual dark murky grey but the squadron leader Admiral Krank has his personal coat of arms on his C7. On our side the Dreadnaught Sprit of Capitalism" is showing off its new paint work with the full saucer showing adverts for this years grav ball league. Not sure about the advert for Mars export Whiskey on the engineering section though, what with all those engineers down there". :D

Just think of the paint schemes this way: The SFU covers over 200 years. During that time there were bound to be variations -- even "white" can vary in how white it is. :)

Jean has a point there!

Well, if you're wishing to paint your Feds as a 'Middle Years' fleet, I'd suggest you want them the same colour as the TOS Enterprise, yes? (From the SFU timeline perspective, the adventures of Kirk and Co. occur during the Middle Years.)

In that case, this article, on the blog of Star Trek makeup / FX guru Doug Drexler, might be of some service:

I certainly intend to give my Feds a spraying of Tamiya Japanese Navy Grey, lightened as described in the post. Setting the airbrush to a narrow spray cone, and lightening further, will add a soft buildup of highlights around the edges of the saucer, etc.

At least, that's the theory... I'll let people know if it works in practice!! :D

Edit: Only my advice, but I suggest you ignore the BS about adding absurd amounts of white to lighten the shade as the size of the miniature decreases - Lighten it up if you like the look, by all means, but if you extrapolate Huntley's percentages, our Klingons should be painted about 20% Grey, 80% white.

Yeah, I was pretty excited about this game until I read that the minis are unpainted. But, I know this is part of the fun of the hobby, so I get it. It's just that I haven't painted a mini for years.

I know what you mean. I would much prefer a light prepainted that is usable as is or can be primed and painted as needed.

But at least ships are easier and take less detail than other figures.

I haven't painted a mini for a long time either and this is what i've come up with so far. They're 95% done. Just need to finish the navigational deflector dish on the frigates and put a matt varnish coat on. If you're unsure about painting, i'd tackle the Klingons first as you can get away with a lot with a grey hull colour and a bit of drybrushing. That's pretty much all i've done with these and i'm pretty happy with them so far.

Thank you. I'll post up specifics this evening, if that's ok. I'm just finishing off the D7, D6 and C7 cruisers at the moment. I'll tell you all of the paints I used and the order in which I applied them, if it will help.

That would be great. I can't wait to start painting mine. :D

Out of curiosity, what colors/brands did you use paint those?

Ok, so as follows;

I brush painted thinned Games Workshop chaos black as an undercoat, having first washed the models in warm soapy water, and then assembled with superglue.
The base hull colour is Revell Aqua Color 79, Greyish blue. Painted that over the hull. The blue radiators were painted with GW Regal Blue, then drybrushed with GW Hawk Turquoise. The red intakes were painted with GW Red Gore then highlighted with a drybrush of the same colour, lightened with a bit of white mixed in. I then gave some of the raised detail sections (wings and neck on the DN, main hull superstructure on the frigates) a wash with GW Black Ink. I then tidied up the main hull colour again, where drybrushing had been untidy. Also painted on a bit of fine detail like lighted windows on the command pod, and so on. Left the whole lot to dry then tackled the minis with a very fine drybrush of GW Skull White around the hull edges and rised sections. This just makes the mini look better, to my eyes at least. I've then varnished them with a GW satin varnish. A bit too shiny for some people but I like my ships that way, and I may cover them with a matt varnish coat if I get to put decals on them at some point in the future.

Hope some of that helps

Well, if you haven't painted in a while, you sure fooled me

They look great! I just hope mine will measure up as well once they come in..
