I would normally say hard copy all the way, but in this case i'd only want the parts that are for the fleets I've got so with PDF I'll save money on the copy and the printing.
Also having a book next to my paints probably means my book will be in extra colurs With the PDF there's nothing to spoil.
That actually might not be a problem so long as it's designed from the outset to be B&W, so that it doesn't have illegible grey text on a grey background, and so long as it includes lists of paint numbers. Instruction sheets for scale models are often B&W, with the colour scheme depicted by different shading patterns (not different shades of grey!) and a table of which pattern corresponds to which paint number.
What's important is layout of colours, e.g. Narn stripes or where the gold goes on Centauri ships; and techniques.
Well it's not really an either or question though is it, a pdf can be released whether or not a hardcopy is, we're just seeing if Mongoose can be convinced to do a hard copy.
But while I was for PDF, I was guessing hardcopy would win... Of course the "hardcopy please" comments were made by forum members after mspange suggested that only PDF will be released =P
