OTT Martial Arts

I've been thinking how to do OTT Kung Fu game mechanics. Mega fights generally build up from fairly simple moves to more and more impressive and outrageous manoeuvres later in the fight. So, Chi should be something that starts off low or at zero, and is built up by doing simple moves until it is unleashed to power the big shots. Kind of like Diablo II and World of Warcraft, where the assassin or rogue uses some moves to gain power-up points, which are then released in "finishing moves". This "Chi" could be something that is scaled like Magic Points, or on a larger scale (e.g. starts off at the level of your POW and then builds up, capped by your Martial Arts skill). Any successful skill use could grant Chi points, including both of successful attack versus successful parry. Or, maybe parrying a blow grants the attacker the damage that would have been done as Chi points.

I'd be interested in where you go with this. It's one area I think would be very cool to see in RQ in general (since no "land of the ninja" is on deck :( ), so I definitely would like to see what you come up with!

I can recall an old 'Rune Rites' article dealing with martial arts. They introduced the idea of using skills such as Jump for increasing the power of an attack with jump kicks, round-houses and the like.

I can dig it out for you and send you a copy if you like.

I like the idea of Chi building as a fight progresses...

In my opinion that's a must-have. There needs to be some mechanism for someone to join a fight half-way through and not just get swatted like a fly for having no build-up though, and it's going to be fiendishly hard to balance a mechanism like this. Easier if it's on a small numeric scale though, e.g. like Magic Points. I think this is why build-up classes, rogues and warriors, in WoW are capped at 100 points, whereas depletion classes' mana is not capped and is measured in thousands.

Any chance I can crib a copy please?

No problem, I'll need to find it first but I'm due a trip to the loft anyway!

I'll let you know when I've got it and then I can send it on, either by post or as a pdf.

IIRC I had a martial artist in one of you games that used a jump-kick rule like that many, many, many years ago.

Sorry, I was responding to the wrong post. It was one of Phil's games.
