Openquest/Legend Hybrid

So I have been really thinking about using Openquest's truncated skill list and Legend's combat system. Instead of weapon styles, you just have Close Combat and Ranged Combat. Not as detailed as some like it, but easy. Not a big change to be sure, but still meaningful in little ways. What do you think?

Funny, I've been debating on combining BRPs more specific and longer skill list, with the Legend combat system, and replacing fighting styles with individual weapon skills like the old days.

Lots of good ways of doing it - I use Legends CA's, and a simplified weapon grouping for skills rather than Styles. I like that you can be a good shot but a poor swordsman or vice versa :)

I suppose it all depends on the level of granularity you want. I'd love to see a variant offering both a basic combat system that is fast and abstract and an advanced combat system that is more detailed and tactical. You could use the basic combat system for incidental fights such as bar-room brawls and the advanced combat system for fights that are essential to the adventure...

You could also use Chaosium's "Magic World" as a halfway house between OQ and Legend.

True, although Magic World has a strong old-school vibe that may or may not be appropriate to all campaigns.
