Some races can onoly have certain background, for example, orcs and tusk riders are prone to being primitive.

For sure. But in this deathmatch everyone is supposed to be human. I havn't been too clear with my question.

Given that we will be using an average, (4d6 times X) (14 times X)
Cultures will get the following amount of silver
Barbarian 280
Peasant 350
Townsman 700
Civilized 1,050
Mariner 350
Nomads 280
Primitive 140

Isn't everyone going to choose the civilized backgound since it is much higher than any other backgound?

Yes, everyone SHOULD pick Civilized for 1,050 silvers.

That way I can pick Noble as a background for 1,400 Silvers.

Though Townsman can take +10% Resilience as part of their background, while Civilised and Nobles can't.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.

Not to mention the starting weapon skills you can get. But my poor barbarian won't be able to buy both his sword and a shield.

True, but a spear and shield is affordable (and not a bad option).

But the only reason NOT to take a noble I can think of is to take the strategy of maxxing resilience, in which farmers and fishermen from a barbarian or nomadic background can get a total of base +50%. That is 15% higher than a noble can get - which could prove decisive.

Cool. What is your character? If you don't mind me asking?

Metagaming the tournament already are we?

Ha Ha Ha  You can see right through me. I didn't think of it, but you're right. Must be the anal GM in me.

Here is the forum for the tournament:

You will need to create a mythweavers account, but that is pretty painless.

Metagaming indeed, but everyone must post his or her character for the rest to see before we start. That way everyone can sharpshoot each other's entry. Sort of like a pre-fight weigh-in.

But why would anyone want to be primitive. Isn't everyone going to be civilized?

Mabey you should have to purchace your spells, like you do for equipment. That will ensure that people don't go too crazy with spells. Or they might not be able to buy that rapier.

Good points, but discovering unfair advantages in the rules is part of the purpose of tournament. If everyone creates a barbarian mercenary (or whatever) then I guess we learned something.

In other words, if one option is better than another, take it!

Cool. I'm also assuming that we are going to be using the combat rules as they are stated in the book. Rather than various house rules.

So things like applying armor penalties to all skills with DEX.

Using the standard HP/AP of weapons.

Is this a correct assumption?

I can see why the rules are modified. Beginner characters are so bad they can hardly hit anything, and if they have any armour on they may as well be inside a garbage can, that is closed.

When my game gets going next week I will let the players start of with seasoned adventureres. Only seems fair.

I know right. It means a lot of beginner players make their characters for the short term rather than long.

Kinda like this deathmatch. If a character wants to really be proficiant at anything, they have to neglect others.

That's a good idea. I should try that with my players. They might be a little more well rounded. Is there anything published on how to generate seasoned characters? I thought I remembered seeing something, but I can't remember where it is.

It's in the core rulebook p103, but not the SRD.

If you don't mind me saying so, there is a Sceaptune Games PDF supplement that gives a slightly different "pick 'n mix" approach to generating more experienced or advanced characters, too The Collected Character.

Thanks! I'll check that out.

And as it's really 4d10*100 I can have 2,200 Silvers, before everyone else realises their mistake. Hurrrrrrrrh!

 !!

Seriously, though, (and I apologise for mentioning it, Rurik) I thought I ought to point out a potential misunderstanding before it's picked up.

What is a D10? Don't all dice have 6 sides?

I just don't see how you can fit more than six numbers on a cube.

Also, how does anyone roll higher than a 66 ever?

I'm so confused.

Actually, I'm sorry for spreading mis-information. My Bad.
