Old game and new books

I;m going to copy and paste a message I posted on another website. It was suggested I ask here instead. Hope that's ok!

Hi guys (and fellow gals)
I started playing DnD over a year ago, and once tried to dm, the guy who plays with us was a big rules lawyer and made the expierence AWFUL for me. I was pleased as punch when an old (copyright 1980)full set of Runequest booklets fell into my lap. We decided that we could that and I'd DM and our ruleslawyer could DM our usual DnD. That way he couldn't lawyer me, because I would know the rules better then him. If that all makes sense.

Now to my actual question, if I buy current books for Runesquest, how different would they be? Have the rules and such totally changed over the years?

I have an old soft cover rule book, a small phamplet style book with two adventures, another phamplet style book with pre-roled characters (mostly bad guys or NPCs) and one or two other small books that I can't remember what they contain. I was hoping that I could supplement those books by buying newer books to. Then I could add more enemies, traps etc then what is in my first book. My only other idea is to buy any other book I want and do my best to translate those items or characters to the Runesquest I have.

Am I making sense? What's your advice?

I'm sure pertty much every one here is more experienced then me. Oh and I haven't finished reading all my Runequest materials yet, mostly because time is precious and I don't want to read them all just to find out I need to buy new books anyway.

Check out the SRD, it will give you example of the changes. I suggest the version compiled by DirkD. http://mrqwiki.com/wiki/images/a/ac/RuneQuestSRDLuxury.pdf

What you have is RQ1 or RQ2, and there are some differences (some considerable) between the version you have and the current version of RuneQuest. As said, the SRD shows where the differences are, but the games are still compatible, and the RQ books from Mongoose will be usable with your older game.

It depends though, on what you want to do. RQ has tradtionally been very different to D&D and it doesn't rely on traps, dungeons and scads of monsters for its focus. First of all, RQ is associated very heavily with the world of Glorantha, which is a world based on myth and mythic possibilities. If you're just looking for a different system to do D&D-like things, RQ will do it, but you'll be missng out on a whole different experience.

If you want some books that are drectly compatible with your version of RQ, look to Moon Design and specifically its Gloranthan Classics range - http://www.glorantha.info/shop/shop.html. These books offer complete campaign areas (Borderlands, Pavis & Big Rubble, Griffin Mountain) and detail on the cults of Glorantha (Cults Compendium) and are 100% compatible with the game you have.

If you want to explore what RQ is doing now, then look at Glorantha: The Second Age and Players Guide to Glorantha - this gives you a full setting in a different historical era for Glorantha. The Cults books, volumes 1 & 2, add the all important cults.

If you're looking for a more generic approach to your gaming, set in your own world, perhaps, then RQ Monsters and Arms and Equipment give you everything you require for building your world and approach. The RQ GMs' Handbook provides some GM tools to assist.

Its up to you. RQ1/2 and Mongoose RQ will work together but you'll need to compare them to see what works best for what you want to do with the game. Download the SRD (see the MRQ Wiki thread on this board) and do a little brainstorming. Whatever you do, I hope you have fun; RQ offers a very different game to D&D.

Impressive.

What is the difference between the deluxe rulebook and this pdf?

When I click on the link, get the message 'The file is damaged and could not be repaired'. Anyone else get the same?

This is all based on the SRD, so there are things that are not in it as are not in the SRD. It was just compiled to have all of the three books like the Deluxe version.

It's a wonderful job, especially as I didn't have the rulebook yet.
