NPC Names

The Warlord

Mongoose
I know Signs and Portents just had a minor article, but anyone have a good resource for npc names to use in all the regions? Love the suggestions in the Core Book, but with limited time on my hands, it'd be helpful to get a larger list.

Thanks

It sounds goofy, but I typically use a baby names site. Here is one that allows you to sort the names by origin, so you can build a load of names that come from a specific place.

I've found the following site useful when creating NPC names,

http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/index.htm

www.behindthename.com

They have lots of lists of names, including ancient Egyptian and Viking if I am not mistaken... Good site.

Hi there. If anyone wants, when I heard Mongoose was going to release the Conan rpg way back when, I went through the Howard stories, and a small number of pastiches, and wrote down the names of every character named in the stories. I have it on a 97kb word doc if anyone wants. And if anyone has corrections, that'd be good to know. I wrote down all the names (many of which do show up in the Conan rpg book), but had to take a good guess as to identity of some, as I was re-reading all these stories in a week and making this thing up.

Anyway, if anyone wants it, just let me know.

If you can get hold of the series of 12 Tor short-story collections from long ago, one of them has a list of all the characters mentioned in the Howard stories and the pastiches up to that time.

The new tradepaper book, The Sagas of Conan, includes the list of place and proper names.

Try this one:

Also, try googling a specific name-search. For example, I wanted a name for my Hyrkanian archer. Since Hyrkanians are Mongol-like I did a google for Historical Mongolian Names. I found several sites that helped.

Of course, the sites that had Mongolioan-English translations helped even more...
