You yourself have pointed out the difference between ships that are on loan, or temporarily used by certain people and 'main line warships' that belong to them :)

and having 15 different versions of the Sharlin isn't the way the game should go........ it's like Warhammer and its special characters :(

Well, you either take it as a set precedent, or you relagate it to campaigns only (like the E-M war ships)

Only issue I have with unique ships is if they are substantially better than other ships of their same type, as they will ALWAYS be taken and replace the regular main line hulls.

lots of games have trouble with this feature, and generally we see lots of 'no special character' campaigns and fights as folks try to get away from the idea that every battle seems to be pitting two famous ships/folks against each other.

i agree, I see that a lot in Warhammer and 40K. In our Bloodbowl leagues we were always banning star players too

Or, after 4 turns, and adult Shadow Ship comes onto the board and orders it home, before apologising profusely to all the other races for the trouble it's caused.

Hmmm more likely the adult ship turns up and starts to appologise at which point the AdSS pulls its molecular beam and threatens the adult SS, before the SS can do anything its then attacked and the opposing fleets can sit back and watch the fireworks from a safe distance.

I think laser/pulse arrays would have worked better if they doubled the range instead of decreasing it. Lasers should have a longer range then the pulse cannons. They do now, why should a combi weapon be different.

One per race would still be interesting and not generate this problem.

Special characters and named ships have their place. Just not in every battle, please...
I don't see what is wrong with special characters, as long as they are not named ones off the show. That would be silly to have them in every game, especially tournaments, if 6 players all have Delenn on board their Sharlin!

I'd definitely be in favour of the special chars Matt has hinted at being in 2e. I'd like them to be customizable characters, so you choose their abilities from a list, and pay for them. Eg can do 2 special actions and is "lucky" like G'Sten... costs 1 Raid point. Then give them a name. Captain Leroy Jenkins for me!! :D

Now something like that is reasonable; if you've got a big fleet and a named 'flagship', having the admiral on it have an affect makes sense.

But it does seem random to have to have a trait that only exists for one ship....

The Dusk Coutari is ok (as a concept, at least); the problem with the Ingata, etc, was that it was the same priority as a normal Sharlin and substantially nastier...same applies to the Endgame.

Maybe it's the GW/EE background, but to me "special character" means a named individual with a pre-defined background and abilities. So in ACtA it'd be Sheridan and Thingie, the Narn warleader bloke.

I like the proposed admirals system Matt mentioned in Signs and Portents very much. I'm going to have to come up with some Centauri characters...

After all the anti-point system rants about not having 'tweaks' folks are now in favor of a menu of options for fleet admirals? Sigh...so much for simple and quick...

I actually think you will have the issue you see in Warhammer or Herohammer as it is most often called around here. The one fig on the table that wins or loses you the game.

Well the Admirals wouldn't be essential, you could just not choose them if you want simple & quick. Besides, it doesn't really take long, to choose 2 traits for your admiral and pay a Raid point After a few times you probably know which traits you're going to want anyway.

well the whole point of the admirals isnt that they will win the game for you, they will give you a edge at something in the battle but at a cost

I guess, but in games where you can tweak you units you rarely have to spend any time on it either. Once you know your army, you know which ones get the grenades and which don't.

As to the power balance thing, that will depend on what the admirals can do. My main issue is this is a D6 game, very little room for small bonuses that don't have major effects. Especially given the number of rock paper scissors effects in the game. Stealth is so tweaked out right now that any admiral effect will likely cause it to break. Dodge...the 4+ to the 3+ flat out broke the WS. Just not enough space for this kind of thing in the system in my opinion.
