Just to get an idea what people prefer. I've done some trial layouts in US Quarto and Trade Paperback ... both work fine ... so what do people prefer?

Phil

It depends on the game actually.

If the game is a simple, pick up and play - like I tend to feel Traveller is, a lot of the time - then smaller handier books are useful.

If I have something with a lot of background, or significant background concepts to digest - like Call fo Cthulhu - then a bigger, meatier hardback is what I like - to allow the text to breathe a little.

On the other hand, I found that some books are too big - Nobilis 2nd edition, for me was just too impractical to read, let alone play with. And I much prefer the 1st edition - which, to be honest I generally only use as a reading book anyway.

8.5" x 11" = like the D&D rulebooks and most normal RPG books (21.5 x 27.5 cm)

6" x 9" = like an CT LBB (15 x 22.5 cm) - that's how big my CT Scouts book is.

5.5" x 8.6" = like ??? Definitely not an LBB. (13.75 x 21.5 cm)

I went with the Trade Paperback size. I love the size of Eden's Classic Unisystem books (AFMBE, Witchcraft, Armageddon) they are very handy and easily my favorite format for an RPG book.

Thank you ! :)

I found the results of my calculations somewhat confusing, too, and
therefore did not trust them.

Phil: can you whack the page sizes up in centimetres for us UK/EU types, please?

Ah. Not on the Poll. Seems to be fixed once you set it.

8.5 x 11 = 21.59 x 27.94 (approx)
6 x 9 = 15.24 x 22.86 (approx)
5.5 x 8.5 = 13.97 x 21.59

I did give the traditional names so they'd be more familiar ... for an old fogey like me who still used Imperial right through High School (yes, used Metrics in Science, and I wasn't bad at Science ... but I ended up a Historian, see 8) ) ... but, obviously, not all of you are old enough to be old fogeys

Not if you're old enough that the first DnD you played was the Little Buff Books in the White Box = Digest Sized

Actually, physically measuring my Scouts Book (and its the same size as all the classic LBBs), the size is actually 5.75 x 8.75, and definitely not 6x9. TPBs are noticeably larger

Digest Sized - or what passes for it on CreateSpace or Lulu.

Phil

Judging by the results so far, seems like Trade Paperback (6x9 or 15.24 x 22.86) is the way to go.

Two column layout, whereas Digest would probably be One column.

Of course, I'll continue to monitor the vote.

(And, if its really really a close vote, one of the beauties of PDFs is that it would not be hugely more expensive ... only time ... to do two different sized versions to keep people happy  )

Eh, I'll give you that :). That's what comes out of measuring a book with a big clunky tape measure...

But a TPB is a lot bigger (if by "TPB" you're talking "graphic novel" size)

Nope 6 x 9 is what passes for "Trade Paperback" on Lulu and CreateSpace ... however, on doing some quick research it seems to vary according to whether it is UK or US or Book of Comic, not as simple as I assumed ... 7 x 10.5 is what you're probably describing :) based on some comic hardcovers that I have.

Never make assumptions, it seems :?

Phil

Personally I have only ever heard "trade paperback" used to describe graphic novels - 10" x 6.5" ( about 25cm x 17 xm).

So long as it is less expensive than $20 US, I'm happy with anything (although I voted for the CT-LBB size).

The PDF certainly will be. If you want a print copy from Lulu, Createspace or ... wherever I can find that does the cheapest good quality job ... it will be more.

I would currently expect c. $9.99 for the PDF depending on page count.
